I remember when I first saw the 1896 Simpson Chain poster drawn by Toulouse Lautrec. Here was a very famous artist who gotten things very wrong. The teeth were on the chain, not the sprockets! Now, artistic license does come into play but Lautrec was an avid follower of cycling, regularly attending races at Paris' Buffalo Velodrome and even sponsoring riders. How could he get it wrong and how could Simpson allow it to be published. Then, I actually saw a Simpson chain...
BTW, the pictured cyclist was Constant Huret, holder of many world's records in distance cycling and the uncle of derailleur manufacturer, Andre Huret.
