Next Portland C&V Ride - Sunday, May 15, 2016
Okay, here's plenty of advance notice for our next sort-of-monthly Portland C&V ride!
Sunday, May 15, 2016 - mark your calendars. Meet 10 am at Velocult. We'll do roughly 25 miles at a modest chit-chat pace, with 11 of those miles on Leif Erickson's dirt/gravel surface under the cool green canopy of Forest Park. Maybe a snackies stop in the forest. Yes, ordinary road tires will do fine, as long as that doesn't mean 19 mm at 150 psi. I'm hoping to see some drillium . . . hint, hint. ( @Insidious C. - good catch! ) |
If Double D is coming, I'm there. If not, I'm there anyways.
|
@Drillium Dude has not graced us with his presence for some years. I hope we entice him down to Portland this time. It'll be a fun ride. Think of it as a mini, mini Eroica.
|
I'm driving down to Phoenix and then Texas sometime in May. I was thinking late May, but mid might also work. I can probably do this, particularly since I was already planning on taking a bike to AZ/TX.
I'll let you guys know. I assume we'll see a detailed route posted here sometime soon? DD |

Here is the route. https://www.bikemap.net/en/route/350...16-campv-ride/
58 km. 760 m climbing. @Drillium Dude Let me know if the link doesn't work. I'm new to all this route mapping stuff. |
I'm interested. I saw that it started at 1000 at Velocult in April? Same bat-time? Same bat-channel? I don't have a true C&V, well except my mid-80s Ciocc with modern Chorus 10 alloy. Not sure if it qualifies as true C&V though.

Yes, 10 am Sunday May 15 at Velocult.
That bike sounds cool, would love to see it. Certainly qualifies! My main ride is similarly a retroroadie. Vintage frame, modern-ish group. |

Yet. |
Well, a recon ride confirms that you can, without undue difficulty, ride Leif Erickson with 23 mm slick tires at 120 psi. I'd recommend lower pressure for greater comfort, this was just a test to see what is feasible.
See everyone Sunday May 15, 10 am, at Velocult! If you remember, bring a quick snackie for our stop at the picnic table about 7 miles into the trail. |

@jyl - I'm wondering if there's a place beyond Lief Ericson where I could meet up with you and finish it out?

1. You could ride with us for the first 6 miles of Leif Erickson to where we'll have our rest/snackies, then ride up Saltzman Road (trail) to Skyline Road, then ride Skyline to Germantown, and meet us at Skyline & Germantown. This bypasses the last 5 miles of Leif Erickson, but those 5 miles are mostly flat and smooth dirt anyway, and also bypasses Germantown from Leif Erickson to Skyline. 2. You could ride the first 6 miles of Leif Erickson, do the snackies, then descend Saltzman to Hwy 30, and meet us in St Johns. This would cut off a fair part of the ride, Germantown to Skyline to Newberry to Hwy 30. You'd have up to an hour to kill in St Johns, maybe have coffee, read a book, have lunch, or something. 3. You could ride Cornell to Skyline to Skyline & Germantown. Cornell is a bit nervy, due to the road having only a narrow shoulder. As far as climbing goes, I think that's a more demanding way than Leif Erickson. This wouldn't actually be any shorter of a ride. 4. You could meet us in St Johns. This would skip almost the whole ride. Leif Erickson itself is quite easy this time of year, since the path is largely dry and firm. Elderly birdwatchers walk it, etc. I suggest you do 1 or 2, or the full planned route, and you can decide at the snackies stop. The section of Thurman before reaching Leif Erickson are similar to and a good preview of the grade and distance of the Germantown section between Leif Erickson and Skyline. Roughly speaking, those sections are similar to going up Yamhill and then Mt Tabor. Your Univega was fine for that. Remind me of its gearing? |
@jyl - I'm likely gonna have my Twenty. I may just swing by VC when you're about ready to finish or do the route backwards from VC until I see you. You can text me your whereabouts so I'll look for you. I'm hosting a Women Bike (BTA) swap meet after your ride over at Ristretto on N. Williams.
|
So, yeah - not this Sunday but next month I am planning on coming down for the Show & Shine :)

What's the swap meet about? Worth checking out? |
The BTA has a Women's Group (women, female identifying) on FB. I'm in the group and suggested we all bring our stuff to meet each other, make friends and trade stuff. So far sounds like many can't make it, but I said I'd be there at 2:00 & wait until 3:00, then leave if nobody showed up. It's the first Sunday Parkways of the year and it's in East PDX. I'm not interested in that one, so no biggie for me.
So, no, you can't come unless you just want to say "Hey". |
Hope you get a good turnout!
|
The 'bent gang is going to do Sunday Parkways starting at 10AM, so I'm heading that direction. I may loop back to VeloCult afterwards in the hopes of running into y'all.
