One of the road frames I bought new in '90 as a frame, the other I bought off a forum member I think 3rd hand.
I picked up the cross frame only a few years ago from someone who bought used from Europe.

Yet a serial number found. This time in an old ebay auction. Italian seller. Pics by "Ciclicorsa".
No F287. Possible respray. Decal on head tube, plastic wire guide under the BB, brake wire entering and exiting on top.

I currently own a Proto 55cm ( BCOC112 ) This was a U.S. model that was all celeste. I repainted it to replicate my older 1990ish all black Proto with the euro logo on the downtube. BCOC104 was stolen in about 93. I also had BCOC115 but it had cracked on the chain stay so I received 104 as the replacement. All 3 I have owned had the machined Bianchi head tube (which was also used on many other high end Bianchi models). They all 3 had internal TT bottom/top cable routing and internal rear der chainstay cable routing. 1 frame had 2 sets of bottle braze ons and all 3 had plastic cable guides under the B.B. shell.

A lot to do at work lately and the rest of the time I have spent on some other hobbies than vintage/semi vintage racing bicycles.
Today, though, I browsed ebay and did my usual round. And got a hit.
Since I found this here on bikeforums:

- and decided to go original with my Proto Caurus, I have been seaching for that needle in a haystack. The handlebar tape. Chances of finding the black to green fade seemed slim. There has been a lot of vintage fade/shade Ciclolinea/pelten/Bike Ribbon/Ambrosio tape for sale but all in X colour to white fade. Today I got lucky though.
Today I bought all five available sets of black to green.
Sellers pic. What looks like white is just the tape glue strip. They are confirmed as black to green.
I actually consider this as the most difficult part to get hold of for this restoration. Of course I could have used black or green bar tape - which is easy to find. But it would not have felt half as nice.

A Swedish guy with the nick DawWwes has bought Sönkes Caurus Proto (mentioned on page one) and made a very nice job on building it up. Very good looking original celeste Almarc leather, Bianchi panto stem, C-record parts, Campagnolo bottle, etc.

Got my bar tape home and today I had an hour to spend in the hobby-shop.
The tape must have been made for these. It is a nice match. Only showing the all green portion of the tape but that is the important part.

While it isn't a Proto here is something you might find interesting, a 1990 or maybe 1991 Boarala cyclocross built with MAX Off Road tubing.
It looks a lot different now I was still noodling with bar/stem setup and cable routing.

I would really appreciate if you would like to add your "90 Proto" serial to the list. If googling Bianchi Proto - this thread pops up first. That would, over time and with more serials, make it possible to make somewhat accurate time line and of course also be a reference point for restorations.

Today I found this Proto Caurus on an Italian site called “Oldbici”. It is said to be NOS but I believe not – but very close. It has at least had wheels attached to it at some point. That aside it is the first good pics I have found of the pink/black paint job version. No pictures of serial number though – I am going to contact them and hear if they would let me know it.
The examples of pink/black ones I have seen have decals on the head tube – not an engraved logo. Even if I do not really like my germoglio green/black paint scheme I am happy I do not have this color combo…

Very interesting. Thank you for posting the pictures. It is always difficult to say for certain anything about these old bikes but from what I have gathered of info and pictures I believe your frame is earlier than 1990-91 and that it might have been repainted somewhere along the way making the tubing decal less relevant. The metallic/pearl paint colour and decals look very much like a bit later (1993 catalog) and the fork looks exactly like the ones normally put on Minimax frames (also 1993).
Your frame on the other hand has all the tell tale signs of a very early Bianchi Proto. Brake cable guides on TT, brazed tunnels under the BB shell, etc. Here are pictures (stolen from net) of number F030 - just some numbers apart from yours.
Please let me know if you have additional info - like you being the original owner to your bike, etc.

I am glad to be the bearer of good news and at the same time sad to be the bearer of bad news.
Bad news first?
1. Shape of tubes (not bad at all - actually)
I wrote earlier that I have never seen a Bianchi Proto frame in anything but MAX tubing. Had my doubts about a Proto being made of MS (Multi shape) tubing. MS tubing has almost no similarity with MAX when it comes to shape/form and size. If you do not believe me – google and you will see. I also wrote earlier there was nothing certain about Italian bike manufacture back then – meaning “who am I to tell you what frame you got”… Which I do now anyway but I hope that you will not take it the wrong way. That is a MAX tubed frame you have got there.
2. Repainted.
If you take a close look at your Columbus tubing sticker you will see the remainders of the text “Riverniciato” in white. It translates to repainted or redone.
Good news!
You have a frame that is made out of MAX tubing! You have got the second earliest Bianchi Proto frame known as of yet. It also has a braze on tab for a number plate under the top tube, behind the head tube, which might be a pointer to it being intended for actual racing. Congratulations!
I hope the good news overshadows the bad and that you do not feel the need to “shoot” the bearer.

I wish I had a picture of it, but I did sell one of those MiniMAX frame sets. It was a dream sale. The Customer asked me to price out 3 top bike options for him. I did a De Rosa something, a Lemond (I think TSX) and the MiniMAX all with Record Ergo. He finally went with the Bianchi since the frame was slightly lighter. It's funny that few other builders seemed to use it butjust used the EL OS instead.

Were all the Proto/MAX frames numbered sequentially and shipped where ever or did each market start with 01? I'll have to check for the exact numbers but both of mine are around 60.

Whoever is auctioning off that 56 is doing rather well, and thankfully past what I would be able to spend on it (no empty hooks in the garage!). I'd like to think that this thread has gotten at least a few more people interested in this model! Thanks, Stygg for pointing it out!
