Raleigh Twenty Sturmey 3 speed with Shimano shifter?

Hi, just picked up a 1969 Raleigh Twenty.
I read Sheldon Browns site on how to adjust the shifter cable tension.
It still wasn't shifting right then noticed it had a Shimano 3 speed shifter.
Are there Shimano shifters that work with Sturmey 3 speed hubs?
I would like to replace it with a correct Sturmey model.
Do all Sturmey 3 speed shifters work? Or are there specific ones?
Thank you

Welcome to BF!

Your three speed shifter needs to be a SA to work on your Raleigh. Any 3 speed SA shifter will work as long as it is in good mechanical condition.

Lots of twenty owners on here. Try the trade thread to see if you an get one.

We like pics of the bike... Lots.

It's not quite what you're asking, but:

Ok, I'll bite.

Any special trick for setting that up? What gear did you start in? Of course I just sold my S3X wheelset, so it's all moot personally.

Note that it's a left-hand lever, compatible with both double and triple setups. Nothing weird about dialing it in, just do it in 2nd like you would with any SA shifter. The biggest "quirk" is the fact that there's a trim position on the shifter that lines up almost exactly with the neutral position between 2nd and 3rd geras on the hub, so you have to make sure you've gotten both clicks when going between those gears.

[MENTION=243]@velocivixen is one of our resident Twenty experts. She's the only person I've personally known to take apart and rebuild an SA 3 speed, and is now doing it with a 50 year old dyno hub.

Thanks.
I will try to take some pics next time I take it out. Kind of dark in my garage.
I ordered an SA shifter from ebay. Nest time I will try the trade thread.
It does change gears but the detents do no seem to line up.
I don't want to damage the hub or anything.

The cable looks like it is from the shimano since it looks newer and is not ribbed.
Can I reuse this with the SA shifter?

Depends on what the shifter end looks like. See Sheldon Brown for how to install a cable:
Installing Sturmey-Archer Gear Shift Cables

The picture show what the cable ends need to look like.
