Hilariously awesome, or awesomely hilarious. Can't decide which.

...and admit it: We all wish we'd been at that particular spot, casually leaning on our vintage 531-built racer, ready to offer up the Riddle of Steel in his moment of dire need.

I liked the bit about others being embarrassed to be seen crossing the line next to him.

Biplane forked Stumpjumpers are now the full on secret weapon in road races.

I'm putting my 84 up for sale- it'll be raining money.

I've read this one before, and "crushes" is putting it a little strong. Having a functional bike allowed him to finish the stage so he could stay in the race at all.

I guess we finally have proof that having the motor is more important than having the technology?

Yeah, isn't the implication that he got on the 32 pound Stumpy and started passing pros on their 12 pound wonderbikes?

It's difficult to believe that he actually caught other riders given that he was riding bear trap style ATB pedals in road shoes with cleats. He definitely wouldn't be pedaling standing, pedaling circles or applying too much pressure on the pedals, otherwise his feet would be constantly slipping off the pedals. Those serrated cages can do a nasty job on the shins and calves.

Maybe they dug into the bottom of his shoes enough to get traction?

I'm not surprised he caught others. In a stage race, you are only concerned about the time cut once out of contention. Since the vast majority of riders are not in GC contention, there will always be stragglers who are well aware of how much time they have left and are doing everything to save up for the next day. That particular climb is fairly steep over the last 4k, he made have had an advantage sitting in the saddle with a triple crank stumpy.

André Darrigade finished Paris-Brussels once on a bike he borrowed from a spectator. Brought his own machine along as well.

Now that's how a man finishes a bike race. He wasn't even using the toe clips.

If you look closely, he's in the left clip.
EPIC pic.
