Shamal wheel help!

World of fantastic knowledgable bike people. I'm having sort of a weird issue with my 1994 16 spoke edition campagnolo shamal rear wheel with 8 speed freehub cassette.
When the wheel came to me it was definitely working fine. Took it for a test ride before doing the service. Thought since they were new old stock I would re grease the hub bearings. Also added a bit of grease to the pawl area to deaden abit of that crazy loud coasting click. After re assembling it and adjusting everything multiple times I keep having play laterally in a couple milimeters each way. cant for the life of me figure out why. I think I also remember reading on here once apon a time someone else having this same problem but I cant find that thread. Any one have any suggestions???? I'm sure it's something simple because the wheel is basically brand new. just driving me crazy.
Also don't want to ride it until I have it sorted because of the risk of damaging cone or bearings...

You're going have a little play, which will be compensated when clamping the quick releases(there should be a little play). As for the ratchet pawl sound, it is characteristic for Campagnolo to make an audible noise, to remind you that you're coasting instead of pedaling, in other words professional riders don't coast and Campagnolo takes the attitude that only pro use their product...

I don't want to be snarky so I'll phrase it this way: If I had that problem after servicing a hub and it wasn't there before I'd be fairly certain I had re-assembled it wrong and I'd just take it apart and do it again. If the play is minimal and the wheel is true (not just not wobbling, but centered), then I think it's the brake out of alignment, not the wheel. This is a really hard thing to figure out without seeing it. It does sound like an incorrect adjustment of the axle cones. If you undid both cones at the same time it's possible the hub is no longer correctly spaced on the axle. Do you have unequal amounts of axle left on either side? If one side is longer that could prevent the quick release from compressing it fully.

thanks car bomb but yeah after trying quite a few times to see what was going on and no real result I did take it all apart and analyzed each possible catalyst. adusting cup and cones isnt a new task to me and I was almost sure it wasnt that. What's new to me is the integration of a free hub as being part of the axle and it kind of disjoints how it all goes together compared to old style with the thread on free wheel. Thread on free wheel makes it very obvious what's going on. Tensioned the lock nut sort of thing that locks in the free hub and also is the end piece for the axle which the frame mounts up to seemed to have changed things. Ill take if for a ride tomorrow and see for sure. Brake alignment is tricky with the delta's but not as tricky and people make it out to be. and a side not I find the delta's to have very good stopping power!
