abandoned fuji

Saw this Fuji royale it's been abandoned. Its locked with a kryptonite u-lock it's been there for awhile. Too bad it's a real nice bike 12 speed down tube shifters. The rear wheel is missing and the front wheel was locked with the frame. The rubber on the tire is starting to dry rott. Hate to see happen. Sorry about the pics I could've done a better job.

Always sad to see this. I must admit to "liberating" a sad story like this or two in college that had been left and tagged by the university for scrap. Intact bikes they would auction off at summer's end, but the pieces and parts they would just throw out, so myself and some other merry men would "reclaim" the broken ones and give them a new life. Definitely a complicated set of moral conundrums attached to thievery-stripped bikes like this....

I've seen this pretty often around Los Angeles. Over the course of two weeks I watched a nice fix gear locked up in front of my local bar get stripped. I was a impressed when I noticed someone took the headset and pulled the cranks.

Stem and bars, rack, brakes, derailleurs.
I suspect the owner isn't coming back for this one... does it count as stealing at this point, or is it merely salvaging?

i'll take the shifters if no one wants 'em!

Laws vary by state, but at some point a bike is definitely abandoned and free for anyone to salvage. If in doubt about the law, you can ask at a local police station. Possibly there's a mechanism for the police to declare it abandoned property based on how long it's been there or condition.

many years ago, in NYC someone noticed a bike at the early stages of being tripped, or maybe put it there for the purpose, and dis a photo story, coming back every few days and documenting the progress until it was just a frame. Then he reassembled it into a time lapse movie.

I remember something like that. Just did some searching but couldn't find it; maybe someone else will have better luck.

Sounds like conquest46 ought to be finding out his local laws right about now. :)

Seems more like community service than stealing. Cleaning up the streets, Youknow that whole broken windows theory

That frame has good paint; it is worth salvaging.

I would call the police department and ask them if there's some law for abandoned bikes. Maybe they'll give you the green light. That bike needs to be saved.

Here in Fort Collins a bike is considered abandoned after 48 hours. the Bike Co-op here picks up the bikes and reports the sn and description to the police, there is a hold for 70 days for the owner to report it missing with proof of ownership. after that if the bike is not reclaimed it gets released to the CO-OP .
