Quill to threadless adapter WITH threadless extender?
I want to convert my stem to a more modern threadless stem, but of course don't want to replace my fork or anything, so I've been looking at the various adapters that are available for 1-inch steerer tube threadless fork bikes (most old road bikes, I have a Fuji Royale from the 80's). I am looking at this adapter:
http://www.amazon.com/Profile-Design...A1L38IOVPHOLSQ and this extender http://www.amazon.com/TRELC-Extender...=A6W39D8P73JEO which I would use in combo, since I need the extra height (I am currently using an extra tall nitto techmonic). Honestly, I'm mainly creating this thread to see if anyone else has used an adapter+extender combo, and if you could provide some pictures of it? I'm worried about how atrocious this might look, and it's pretty hard to find any images of these components together actually ON a bike. If anyone has any images or perspective that would be awesome |
I haven't used one, even though I like/need my bars up high, because I'll use a Nitto Technomic quill instead. Any particular reason why you want to go threadless if you're not going to replace the fork?
|
I currently have the same stem as you. I want to go threadless because the nitto does not have a removeable faceplate, which is an immense inconvenience. Also, I have heard people say that their front end felt a lot tighter/sturdier with a modern stem setup. My nitto stem is very creaky, and feels a bit bendy at times, since it's so long. And all quill stems that I can find with removeable faceplates are even uglier than I can imagine this zombie-like setup looking.

Velo-Orange has something that might work:
VO Threadless Stem Adaptor - Quill Stems - Stems - Components it's a lot cheaper than the two of the other items combined and I imagine it will look a lot cleaner |
But this is basically the same thing as the adapter I posted above, I would still need an extender.

No, it's actually not the same as the adapter.
The adapter you posted has 25mm rise if used with spacers it says. Then, you would add the extender, which is listed as being able to add an extra 70mm of height. That combination looks to add about 95mm total. What I showed you has an overall height of 180mm, 110mm of that is above the minimum insertion line, but with a 40mm clamp height it offers 70mm of extra height maybe? Your combination raises the handlebars 95mm and the VO piece raises the handlebars 70mm. They're going to be within 25mm of each other. Depending on what stem you're using you could get that 25mm back easily. On the plus side of the VO piece is that it's cheaper than the combination and in my opinion looks better. Have you measured your current quill stem setup and figured out just how much rise and extension you need to hit your target handlebar position? There is also quill stems like this that have removeable faceplates for easy handlebar changes if that's why you're going threadless. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sunlite-Stem...0AAMXQrhdTTC0C There are also adapters that are MUCH longer than that Profile Design piece so you may not need an extender. I think this one is about 85mm of rise? http://www.ebay.com/itm/STEM-RISER-S...sAAOSwEeFVJ33O Measure twice, buy once =) |
That longer adapter you posted is actually just a quill stem extender, it allows you to put another quill into the top to make a short one very long.
Anyway, I would go for a quill stem with an open face. But I need a considerable rise (not hard to find), with a very short extent (currently at 50mm and feeling good). It seems impossible to find a stem with this height and reach without it looking hideous. I do like the sunlite one you link, and would probably buy it, but its reach is 80mm while I'm comfortable at 50. What should I do? |
Would this work? It is a Soma quill to threadless adapter with an extra long riser section.

Don't like the looks or the feel. Maintenance, of course, is much easier. That said, I am going back to a quill stem for my Cyclops...

Maybe, kinda massive though. Would I be able to fill it in with spacers?

Paramount1973 that's pretty clever! I'm going to file that away in my noggin'. I wish they made something like this for 1 1/4 steerer tubes for my current project, grumble grumble.
