Garage Sale goodies need maintenance

howdy,
i recently purchased two cruisers at a garage sale. one, the lesser of the two, is an AMF Roadmaster single speed fixed/coaster - approx. vintage late 60s early 70s.

i am having rear hub/gearing problems, the likes of which i have never seen. the bike will actually pedal forward, that is spinning without moving the bike, for many revolutions until it finally catches - and then the gears work per normal.

also, at no point does the coaster brake work. in fact, if you spin backwards to engage the brake, you then have to spin forward many revolutions for the gear to catch again before moving.

there are no markings on the hub. no name or info. only silver lines - nothing more.

can anyone give me info on where to find hub diagnostics on Roadmasters of this vintage?

much appreciated.

Is there anything marked on the brake arm that's along side the hub (probably the non-drive side), and attached to the chainstay? I would think it's either a Bendix or a New Departure hub...

ah, Bendix it is?

i figured that applied only to the coaster brake. So, any ideas on a faulty Bendix hub?
thanks!
