Raleigh Superbe brooks seat needs repair

Hi. I have been riding around on this bike for a couple of years, to me it has just been a bike and I didn't bother looking it up. It is is very good condition and is serving me well.
The seat needs repair, it is a Brooks, the plastic support underneath the seat is toast and I can't keep riding it like this.

How do I go about fixing it?
I also have to replace the handgrips, they make my hands all black. Any suggestions?

thanks.

Mike

Welcome to the forum Mike.
Which part exactly is it that needs repair? Brooks carry a huge amount of replacement parts for their saddles, although not for every model. Anything can be repaired in theory, but it might be time to upgrade that saddle to something like a leather Brooks if you ride it a lot and plan on keeping it. A leather Brooks has nothing but the leather hide and the steel frame in its construction, and once it's broken in the bike will feel like it was tailor made for you. High quality and needn't be too expensive if you buy second hand.
Grips are a matter of personal taste. I always like to keep to period correct parts on my bikes but if the bike is serious transport then anything goes. There's some nice leather grips that will match a leather saddle, but I quite like foam as a material. Comfortable, light, and doesn't leave marks all over your hands!
The Superbe is a great bike and you'll find a lot of love for them here. Check out the 'for the love of English 3 speeds' thread in this forum for information and inspiration.

The saddle may not be stock. The Superbe came with a leather B-66 saddle; the cheaper Sports and LTDs came with Brooks vinyl mattress saddles.

So I took that bit of information and googled. I definitely do not have a B66 and maybe I have a Raleigh Sport. I can't tell the difference between the Superbe and Sport, they look the same to me. Still a nice ride to me no matter what it is.
There are no stickers on the bike. My wheels and most parts are black except the frame...it is that nice green color. OK, I think I have enough info to proceed.
I don't think I will be spending $200 CDN on a Brooks seat as nice as they seem.

I am on the right track now though. Thank you.

The frames are pretty similar, but the Superbe came with the leather saddle, Dynohub to power headlight and tail light, locking steer tube, and a rack, painted the same color as the frame.

Persons makes a B17 like leather saddle (model 77) for 58 USD. Still expensive, but a good saddle makes a big difference and a deluxe Raleigh, Sport or Superbe, deserves a leather saddle.

what about repairing a B66? I have a saddle on my gent DL1 that need some love. The leather has split.

I have the vinyl brooks on my '79 Puch commuter and my behind protests at around mile 10. Rode 34 miles on Sunday on a vintage B66 and not a whiff of soreness though I do need to adjust the seat angle a smidge. I'm a Brooks convert.

Well, the leather can be replaced, but it cannot be repaired.

Sometimes you can find leather tops of that type on eBay that you can rivet on. Usually from India. They are cheap, but I am not sure which sense of the word "cheap" I'm using. Honestly I'm not even sure they're leather.

I can replace the leather for you with real thick leather, but alas I'm not cheap. Those wide saddles are challenging. I don't like to ride on them, don't understand the aesthetic, and don't quite get what they're supposed to feel like.

Wondering if what the OP has is a B-72.

as my DH says, cheap is the enemy of good ; )

I've looked at the newer B66s and they are slightly different. I'd love to have a numbered saddle. I send a message offline.

I was wondering if he was referring to one of these? My 63 sport came with something very similar, says Brooks on the back plate
