Henri Gauthier saddle

I like leather saddles and I'm cheap, so whenever a nice old one pops up in the classifieds, I'm game. Especially if it's not the ubiquitous Brooks.

As was the case with this NOS Henri Gauthier 79. More about Henri Gauthier here and here. There are a few on Velobase as well.

Nice! I have saved the photos to my file of interesting old saddles.

I don't know who made these, but I have two saddles in my "study collection" with the same frame. One is stamped "Mercier" and the other has a big Motobecane "M" on it. So whoever it was, apparently they made saddle for bike companies.

T&B did that as well; the Schwinn "Sprint" saddle seems to use the same frame as the Ideale 42.

Well, I am honored!

Gauthier & Cie was a rather big firm that could provide anything bike-related (and made car bodies to boot), so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he made saddles for others as well.

Here's a couple more Henry Gauthier saddles, the number 1 and the number 73 to compliment your 79:

The 73 is very narrow and probably a track saddle.

In the background is another obscure French saddle the 'Pearl', probably from the 1940's. It has duraluminium rails and the maker's name stamped on each rivet.

Thanks for adding those, @realsteel.

I saw pictures of the 73 model and it looks painfully narrow to me. Very pretty, though.
