Sure looks swaged to me. The one I had was crank arm+spider a single casting. Later model?

Hey, it's free, give it some riding time. You might like it. At the very least you have a rack and what looks like some shimano golden arrow parts.

I learned something today. I had always thought these were cast as single pieces, and that the "swaging" was referring to the spiders which had chainrings irremovably attached. |

Swaged cranks? Are you looking at FXjohn's picture?
If I had come across this, I'd convert it to a fixed gear or single speed (including changing out the crankset), clean up and sell off the 600 group, and hold onto the rack. There are actually some places in the country where Ross bicycles are well regarded (some pockets in Pennsylvania for one). My wife rides around a Ross Centaur that someone abandoned in a small town in Illinois, and she is quite pleased with it for the type of riding she does. |

I was a little confused about what you guys were referring to about the swaging, since the picture in post 26 sure looked like a regular single piece casting followed by machining with nothing in that picture showing anything swaged. Then I looked back at the other pictures showing the crank on the Ross and finally saw that the spider and crank arm were two pieces. Okay now I understand, on that design the spider was swaged onto the crank arm.
If those pieces were steel, no big deal. I had an old Suzuki with a roller bearing crank, pressed together, that model of bike was commonly used by the drag racers. 100 hp at 10,000 rpm and the cranks held up (usually ). Aluminum though? Seems like a poor spot for that fabrication method. Anyhow, looks like a nice free bike. |
