Do you have a local mailing list for bike racers? If so, I'd post a message asking for tires. Cyclocross racers are obsessive tire collectors and as they switch over to tubeless or tubulars it's common for them to have a stash of clinchers in good shape that they won't be using again. I've given away perfectly good CX tires just because they didn't shed mud well enough.

The last time I bought a bike this rusty (a 1977 Gitane Gypsy Sport), the only parts I used were the frame fork and headset (minus the bearings, obviously). I threw everything else in a box.

At least the Clubman has plastic derailleurs.

Barn storage in Oregon is nearly the ideal setting for rust growth.

I actually have cleaned up a few of these parts and kept them. I wouldn't exactly call them gold though. I use the left crank arm for stress relieving wheels, but I could probably put that crank on a bike if I needed to (and this challenge has me considering it). There's a SunTour Honor rear derailleur in there somewhere that could probably be made to work too.

I ordered my first part from the Internet today and figured some of you on tight budgets may be interested too.
$3.28 shipped for new bar tape and bar end plugs.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B014I...236_SY340_QL65
Im predicting that this is some really high quality stuff.

nice find. I am not sure how they can make any money selling that cheap. I put it in my basket but not ready to buy yet: I can always re-use the old tape on the bars I got if it comes down to $3.28 -. like I might want 2 bottle cages.

I had to do something for tape because mine was only wrapped to where those sweet aero bars clamped on so it is too short to re-use and the only old used stuff I had laying around was white. I was looking to buy cloth, but that stuff was even cheaper!

Great to see this challenge up and running again, thought I might play with this Nishiki (model Unknown, can any one help?) that I will pick up next week. Cost is $50 NZ ($35.51 USD)

Plan will be to be to run it as is, then possibly get an old NZ made 10 speed going with the remainder of the $100 US($140.82 NZ).
Will see how I go.

O.K., as of last night, I'm in: CL find, 196X Bronze Schwinn Super Sport, $25. Rough shape, but still has the Brooks saddle in salvageable shape. I say 60's because it resembles the 1964 SS I once had: Down tube shifters, Weinmann brake levers w/o the safety levers found on the 70's bikes, forged dropouts with axle adjuster screws, Ava Stem with drop bars similar to the track bar that was on my 64. Pics to follow.
Edit: Started with the saddle/seatpost. Seat post was only mildly stuck, came loose with some penetrating oil. Last night I cleaned the Brooks with glycerine saddle soap, then liberally applied Leather Life, a Prufhide substitute by Wildcat Saddlery of Utah. Turned out well for the 1st treatment in many years. It will be rideable, but not very pretty. I'm calling it "Patina". Bike as found weighs 32.2 pounds and I'm trying for sub 30 pounds for the renovated bike. Don

Sweet. I picked up a little later SS (turkey levers and stem shifters) in green for $20. No Brooks saddle but some decent upgrades and a San Marco saddle.

My entry is no more. Well at least it doesn't belong to me anymore. I was offered actual money for it and naturally had to take it in the spirit of the "buy it" clause. I do have another candidate although it's not quite C&V. I picked up a Dawes Giro 300 on eBay a couple of weeks ago, sold as a frame but really a complete bike without the wheels. I'll edit in a screen captured photo of the auction in a moment, in it for around $25 give or take.

The paid for date is when I finally got around to marking as paid as I picked it up on the 23rd and paid cash. That shot makes me look a terrible eBay buyer

Ok, so I picked up the Nishiki today and we'll in its current set up it is way way too low in the handle bars.
So as you can see the seat is way higher than bars.

On a positive note the bike comes with LX Derailleurs and Crankset, 105 Brake levers and XTR Cantilever brakes!! Nice parts harvest if it is too small with a stem change, may not be my Clunker entry, need to sit down and work out the numbers and see if it will work.
If not this will be my challenge bike.
Healing 10 Speed made in New Zealand in the 80's

Bike come with with the bars shown and some old MTB levers(80's conversion by the looks of it) and a different wheel set, these wheels are just on for show and these tyres owe me $100.
So I have a set of 2nd hand Kenda Black walls that owe me $10 so they will go on, then need to cable it up etc.

Before:

After:

I haven't even broken out the heavy duty solvents yet.
The thing that has surprised me most so far is that the the stem and seat post both came out without a fight.

Thanks. Saddle still shows a few big cracks plus a large (about 3"), shallow cut on the rear surface, but the smaller cracks all closed up. I have several leather saddles from this period that are in better shape though. Their very thick leather makes them useable even if they aren't pretty. This is a model B15, all I have ever seen on the Super Sport. There is no discernable difference from the B17, although I do have B17's of varying leather thickness. I wonder if the B15 was a Brooks made to Schwinn specs? Don

Bar Ends Forever
So I've hardly done anything but planning, and I'm already really enjoying this challenge.
I realized that I'd never be able to bring the Schwinn I pictured earlier in under budget without going back to the original fork and trying to straighten it, and even then I'd probably have to delude myself about the value of some parts I had on hand. I might still try that as a secondary project, but in the spirit of the challenge I decided it was back to the drawing board.
That decision was made easier by coming across this bike on CL for $30.

Seeing how it looks in this picture also clarifies for me the likely nature of some of the earlier pictured project bikes. I had been thinking that people going out and buying a very nearly ready bike just weren't challenging themselves, but looking at the picture above I see that it looks pretty decent, whereas in reality it's a pile of rust that I wasn't really comfortable walking next to without checking to be sure my tetanus shot was up-to-date.

CannedPakes it looks like a Simplex, pretty common for the era, prone to cracking due to the plastic drying out but otherwise a very useable unit.

howdy - thinking about jumping into the challenge with a Schwinn Continental.

- I don't know my Schwinn's - $40 worth? I was thinking of offering $30.... gotta get the whole deal rolling for under $100 and ride it 100k!
ps - kind of keen on the chrome fork and the center pull brakes, mostly.

Like Bicycle Addict said, it's a Simplex -- Prestige I think. I thought the plastic was blue, but after a preliminary cleaning it turns out it was just faded. It doesn't look like it's broken in any way. I'm hoping it will work well enough with a little cleaning and lube.
