Alex Moulton "Detachable"

A few years ago I picked up an Alex Moulton(AM14) from ebay for a very good price(local pick up only), rode it a little then sold it. I regreted selling that bike because I knew it was going to be almost impossible for me to find a deal like that ever again. Then comes this on the local CL(1 mile away from my workplace) from a guy that I think got as a gift, he was moving and selling everything in his garage.

This one is a jubilee, campy equipped.

The nicest part was the price on it.

$50????!! That's all those eyetalian bikes is worth.

Lucky you! A well equipped Alex Moulton folder for the price of some used shifters. Can't beat it. The shop I worked at in the 80s was an Alex Moulton dealer. I always like those. IIRC they started at $1500 or so back then.

That would make a good packable touring bike.

Such a cool bike.

Love to have two of these for my wife and myself.

They'd be perfect for our jaunts around Bayern when we visit her family.

Easy to handle in cities and carry on trains.

C Record? Brooks? $50?

Score of the year.

Very nice, I have had my eyes open for one of these and never see anything like this in a decent price range. Great find.

Demountable, not folder.

I paid that for original '65 non-demountable a decade ago and thought I got a good deal.

I stand corrected, I guess you would call it "detachable". You can still fold it in half once you break it apart :)

Yeah, not really "folding".

For those of you that aren't familiar with Moulton, he was the inventor of the small wheel bicycle. We associate it with folding city bikes nowadays, but originally it was done for engineering reasons. Moulton felt that a bike with small wheels and a suspension had some advantages over the traditional large wheels and rigid frame.

It was only later did people realize that small wheel bicycles could be made to fold.
