Help with Campy Record Headset
5 Attachment(s)
Hi folks
I have a Q on these Campy headsets. These 3 images are of the same bike, and presumably of the same "Record" headset. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=527586http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=527587http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=527588 These 2 images are of a different bike. As you'll see, the lower half is clearly not Campy, nor is it a match with the upper half. The upper half, however - looks like the lower half of the headset above (image 3). http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=527589http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=527590 So labeling all the images 1-5, 3 seems to be a match with 4 (?). They are on different bikes so they aren't together. I didn't ever expect the headset in images 1-3 are not together, but with this 2nd bike, now I'm wondering. So Qs: Is 1-3 together or is it a mismatch? What do I have in image 4 and 5? If 1-3 is a mismatch, does 3 go with 4?? Thanks in advance. |

I vote for a mismatch. Pic #1 is of a late model Record. I snapped a couple of quick pics, including a new Record that I installed a few hours ago. The bottom cup looks different as seen in my pic. The square adjustable cup is a feature of the C-Record era headsets but I don't know enough about the differences to tell them apart if they're not labeled. (My pic #3 ) I have 6 or 7 bikes with Campy headsets and none have that black part. It does look kind of familiar, but I can't place it.

1,2 & 3 are a match and correct for a late 1990s Record headset. Numbers 4 & 5 are a match and correct for a mid-1990s Record headest. it's just that the lower cup is missing the cover for the lubrication port. For some unknown reason, they dropped this feature on the upper stack for the late 1990s version.

This ^^^ For the 1--3 pics, I had one of those sets come on an older bike that I took it off to put a more period correct headset on, and put that headset on a small display frame in my home office to hold fork on until I build proper, if I ever do.
I came across an old Campy sales ad for them and it says the print is made to be easily removed with acetone? or some common solvent if you don't like it (I assume to make it look less modern). http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/a...psbtiypn2a.jpg |
