Campagnolo bottom bracket spindle length
 
I tried to install Super Record cranks on my Merckx today. The chainring is about 1mm from hitting the stay. My spindle is 110mm. What length spindle do I need?

The SR cranks have a different raised lip on the spider at the spindle's entry point, See the below replies for which length you need, Skip. What is this for, If I might ask?

FWIW, the most common Campy spindle length on ebay is 115mm.

Post CPSC is 115.5, before that I believe 113.

111 is C Record era ( Chorus, Athena) double I'm pretty sure.

110 is a track spindle and would have a P designation (P = pista = track). Campagnolo road spindles during this era were marked 120 and have SS designations (S = Strada = Road)

"Super Record" cranks really refer to the chainrings. In my view the only true Super Record cranks would be the last generation, no fluting of the crank arms.
As Super Record began before the CPSC modifications, the real determining factor for spindle length needed are the dimensions of the crank.
the date code on the back or lack thereof gives a useful direction.
As stated earlier, the dimensions used for the spindle do not match what you have. It would be interesting to see what the markings on your spindle are.
For additional guidance on what to get, check the chain line as installed with what you have with a suitable straightedge, I use the Campagnolo tool and flip it just to make sure.

The one I have now is around 110.5 off a Chorus crank. Not realizing that it would be different. I need to learn that stuff.

You and me both, brother, you and me both. I spend an inordinate amount of time at Campyonly (even if its stagnant right now,) Velobase and Classic Rendezvous, just reading and absorbing information about Campy stuff, not to mention the Velo Retro Campy time line. Drillium Dude warned me about the spindle length problems when he approached me about building the Medici frameset up, words to live by.

What's the date code on your crank? For Italian BBs, pre-1978: 113mm, post 1978: 115mm.

On your crank arm? 1982, post CPSC requiring a 115.5mm spindle for italian BB and 113.5 for BSC.

Sometimes I find those charts confusing....

An easy way to ID the proper spindle is to look at the markings. If it's marked +1.0 +1.5 its post CPSC.

Here's my cheat sheet:

Italian:
Double -Pre CPSC: 113. Post: 115.5
Triple - Pre: 118. Post: 124

English:
Double - Pre: 112. Post: 114.5
Triple - Pre:117. Post: 123

Spc -- ≻ c - record
Ssa -- ≻ croce d'aune
Ssb -- ≻ chorus
Ssg -- ≻ athena

axle code: 68 or 70-SS- rear hub width(120/5 speed was right side 20, 19 for 70 shells)


rear wheel centered so 126 adds 3 on each side, 130 adds 5 in over lock nut per end

No, spindles way before the CPSC changes were made with + designations, and were just that dimension specials.
Used to fix chain line problems, often created by aggressive facing of a bottom bracket shell for example.

To make it more confusing, I think they only did that for a couple of years though, before dropping that, then just using the 70- SS (or 68-SS) instead of the pre CPSC 70-SS-120.

It's good to have a thread like this every year or so to brush up on this stuff.
