Heard a rotational creaking sound on my last ride.

Today I took a moment to chase it down... Bottom bracket was nice & snug. Crank & chainring bolts were good & tight...

Turned out to be a loose pedal.

Imo, the pedal is the potentially worst of those, sometimes it hoggs out the threads with little warning, its the one not to ignore.

That reminds me, I need a pedal wrench. I picked up some old red Ritchey pedals, dirt cheap, but my old ones are really on there. 🙄

I also find that some dish soap on a toothbrush and a good gentle scrub gets them very clean too

I had a pair of white ones on my Univega. Not as bad as yours but got it decently cleaned with Simple Green and also Dawn. Bad thing is, after almost every ride or two, they didn't look too good. Cleaning them every week got old. Luckily I came across an Exage Sport brakeset on one of my freebies with darker color hoods. Slapped those on and no more dirt.

Built this wheel. Ambrosio Crono laced to a Mavic 500 hub with bladed spokes in a radial pattern. I've built lots of wheels before, but this was a first for a radial lacing and bladed spokes.....big fun! The Vittoria Corsa CX tire is on for an overnight stretch. The glue will come out tomorrow.

I rode home last night in snow, and the streets had been salted, so I brought my commuter bike (1974 Raleigh International) into the apartment upon arriving home rather than leaving it in the bike room. This morning, before heading out, I did a few tweaks.

I had been meaning to move my saddle forward a centimeter, so I did that. The mounting bolt on the seatpost was shockingly tight, so it made me think maybe it's time to regrease the seatpost. It turned out not to be necessary, but it never hurts to do it often. I oiled and wiped my chain. My bike has been out in the dirt quite a bit, and I didn't bother cleaning anything else. I checked the chain for wear, and I'm pleased to discover that it's still in great shape. I also cleaned the derailleur pulleys. I should clean my chainrings soon, because that grime works its way onto the chain. Keeping cassette, chainrings, and pulleys clean helps keep the chain clean.

I keep meaning to put a rack on and re-install my dynamo lights. Overall, the bike has been pleasant to ride and reliable.

It is currently -16 degrees Celsius or 3 degrees Fahrenheit here in Ottawa, and they salt the roads and some of the cycle paths heavily. My IGH + dynohub Peugeot commuter will have its shakedown rides in our winter weather, which is a shame but that's the job. I am worried a little about my B&M lights sitting out in the cold while the bike is locked up at work. The paint has nicks in it, and I figured that it would be a good idea to use clear nail polish. I have Krown rust prevention spray that I'm going to use inside the tubes. I predict lots of cleaning in my future, but man am I excited to get off the bus / train and ride. Having more control of my commute again will be welcome.

Ged117 in a recent local radio show on commuting (by all modes), the respondents who commute by bike resoundingly said that they commute by bike because it makes travel times predictable. It's true. NYC is a transportation mess, more than ever. Even walking is difficult because the streets are so crowded. But bike commuting takes a predictable amount of time virtually all the time. I've always ridden a lot but never as much as now, because I've got my system down, and I don't want to give up my independence. Also, Citi Bike has made it a lot easier. When I have reason not to use my own bike, I can use Citi Bike, and I can even use it for one-way trips.

Just overhauled three hubs for a friend, a Malliard, a Normandy, and a Campagnolo Record. All are old school ones.

Also finally put V-brake levers on my dropbar MTB with V-brake calipers. No I have to move the brake levers further down on the hooks of the handlebar and that means getting new sections of housing for the section that runs from my interrupter levers to the V-brake levers.

Shakedown cruise on the Raleigh Competition.
Rode on the tires on the Nisi Toro wheels that I co-op’d...ollld!
Put 50lbs in last night...still up this afternoon.
Presta valves through the Shrader valve holes...to be remedied.
Ride limited to early sunset, those tires, and, oh yeah, my bronchitis! I’m die’n!
Bicycle rode beautifully!
Now to tear it down and service it...and fix the brake cable!

Pulled my latest find out and gave it a good look in the daylight, it's even better than I thought. A couple small scratches on each fork leg about 4 inches down from the crown and a small scratch on the LH seat stay about half way down. Only one scratch was through to the primer or base metal. Zero scratches on the main triangle or decals. There is a decal on the LH chain stay that says "Handmade by Kuwahara" in cursive script. I aired up the tires and took it for a short ride, it rides great all it really needs are bar tape, brake hoods, matching tires and a good cleaning and detailing. The worst thing I found was that someone drilled out the rear rim so they could use a Schraeder tube. I removed the kickstand to find totally pristine paint, not even the slightest sign of any scuffing! That made my day and yes, the kickstand is staying off!
