As I wrote earlier, I was switching from a 105 crank to an Ultegra Octalink crank on my McLean. I had the wrong Octalink BB. So I put the right one in today. And the crank still slipped on the spindle. I think I chewed up the spline on the inside of the cranks! Damn. So I put the old 105 crank. I don't like this one because (1) it's ugly, and (2) the cranks are too long (175mm). Now I'll look for yet another crankset. I lost some money making this mistake! I can resell the BBs I have but not the cranks.

That’s a bummer, Tom.
I successfully altered my front brake hanger and mounted the VO decaleur. I had to use a cutting wheel to remove material on the cable hanger so it nests over/around the decaleur in 3 places, and it worked well. Dremel for the win! The bottom of the bag falls just a bit short of my rack but I can put something on the rack to let the bag rest on. I’m really happy with the results. I have black Brooks microfiber bar tape arriving tomorrow so I replaced the white cable housing with black, and I like it more than I thought I would. Next up is seeing what I can do about the front derailleur cable clamp. I’m sure the aluminum arm of my old Campy is stripped so I’m thinking of either a larger diameter bolt, a smaller but longer one with a nut, or trying Loctite Form-A-Thread.

Very nice, Andy. Dapper, as always.
I forgot one thing. I realized I needed to put my old crank back on, and it uses the regular square taper type spindle. The crank fixing bolts I have are 15mm, though new ones are 14mm. I found a 15mm socket but the walls were too thick. I wonder where my thin-wall socket went. So I put the socket to the grinding wheel and thinned the walls. It's really nice to have a bench grinder.

I got a Novara Randonee last month and tore it down today, I want to get it refreshed so I can leave it at work and make the most of afternoon daylight to get in shape for a ride at the end of April.
starting point\

Where I finished

Next comes the actual work

Well, I've been hack sawing lately. This is one of those things that I put on the to-do list about two years ago and finally spent five minutes doing. There might be a lesson in there...
I trimmed a bolt.

Makes me want a grinding wheel.

Spidel non drive side cup.
Stronglight drive side cup.
Stronglight plastic thingie in the bottom bracket.
Stronglight axel.
Loose bearings both cups
Suntour Apex cranks.
170mm. Marked 78.
Head set felt horrible.
Short about 6 bearings!
Raleigh Suntour VGT rd.
Fiddled with the B screw and it shifts like a hot knife through buttah.
Suntour mountech fd
Works as designed.
Suntour Power shifters...almost feel indexed...gotta research these.
Seat’s fluted post looked suspect...seat fell into the seat tube as I loosened the bolt!
Phew!
Chain is marginal.
Rigida wheels.
Dead nuts true.
Both dished perfectly.
Bump in the rear.
Uneven spoke tension.
Loosened everything and retentioned...just a hint of bump.
Dished and true again!
Cables all look good.
Lube and adjust.
Good Panaracer Kevlar tires.
Holding air and seem newish’ish.
I see another one of these Grand Jubilees, dif spellIng, blue, bigger frame, in the other side of the shop/garage.
There may be one more in the attic...

Just finished the bar tape. Going to use an old blackburn front platform rack so i can do grocery runs or very light touring. Lights are coming too. This bike feels great. My first straight gauge 531 frame.

Today I finally got going on a project that's been in the planning stages for the past three years: Replacing the Schwinn crank on my '73 Super Sport with a Nervar Star. This bike was built as a copy of my first ten speed (remove as much weight as possible, tubular rims on the Schwinn approved hubs, Huret downtube shifters in place of the Schwinn stem shifters), and I've got a lot of fond memories. But that crank eventually had to go. I'd always hated the kludgy conversion bottom brackets available in the past, and when I ran across the alloy Ashtabula to English bottom bracket adapters, I figured I'd give one a try.

The adapter fits up very well. One caveat: It's designed to be used with modern sealed bearing bottom brackets using the internal splines tool to assemble. I'd originally hoped to use the original Nervar bottom bracket, but the cups are recessed into the adapter so the chainwheel side cannot be tightened down. There's no way a 36mm wrench can grip the flats. I ended up using a 68 x 110 Shimano with gave me identical chainwheel positioning to the original Schwinn.
Still looking for an answer regarding the rear derailleur. The current rear . . . . . well, it shifts like a Huret Allvit. Restrictions are that it must be French, 70's, and either take the Schwinn long arm or have one of equal length. Prefer to keep the drivetrain all Huret if possible. I'd already tried converting a Huret Svelto to the Schwinn arm (mounting points are identical) and, if anything, it shifted worse! And no, I do NOT want to put a Sun Tour on the bike, no matter how proper a 70's solution it is.

OK, I haven't seen a Madison quite like that before. Is that all custom paint? The decals kinda say "1984" but the TIG frame says, I dunno "late 90's," or something? I have no idea what fork is telling me

Installed new brake cables, housings (rear is internally routed thru the TT) and Kool Stop salmon pads on my '84 Peugeot (bought new). Adjusted the RD and minor wheel truing. It should be good now for another 35 years.

I tuned up my friend's Specialized Allez. I don't know what year it is, but it's pretty new. The front derailleur tosses the chain to the left of the small chainring. I couldn't reproduce the problem on the stand, and I didn't have time to try it on the road. I did bend the inner part of the cage in so it would shift up more readily. I trued the front wheel a bit. Last week, I showed her how to adjust the brakes and helped her adjust the tilt of the handlebar. She's going to be in a duathlon and a triathlon this year, both in Central Park.

Today I cleaned and polished the crankset for my Cimarron. There's a lot of shoe wear on the crank arms, but I'm not about to sand and polish that out. I also started cleaning both derailleurs. I am amazed that the PO thought that WD-40 was a lubricant; he must have sprayed the whole bike monthly with the stuff for years - at least it kept most of the parts from rusting.

My '84 Centurion Turbo is my second experience with Suntour friction shifters. The first one was a Schwinn Circuit. Both times, the bosses were too shallow (or the fixing bolts too long) and I fixed it with additional washers/spacers. This morning, I installed some Superbe levers received from @RobbieTunes and there was no way that I was going to flank those Superbe levers with washers. A probe indicated sufficient depth and insufficient threads so I got out my m5 tap and crossed my fingers. Voila!
