Wheelset suggestions for mid-80's ATB

I'm tinkering around with an '85 High Sierra and after breaking 5 spokes truing the wheels, I have decided to cut my losses and build a new set.

While disassembling, I discovered that the Shimano LX (FH-M570) needs rebuilding and the front hub is actually a Formula FCM. It looks just like a Shimano LX hub but is far from it. I will be donating that one to my local co-op.

The Mavic X221 rims are in OK shape but don't get very good reviews with cracking being the major complaint.

The only part of the current wheelset I am semi-interested in is the Shimano rear hub but even that I can pass on and use for something else.

If you were modestly rebuilding a vintage ATB, what 26" rims and hubs speak to you? Upper echelon hubs, like Chris King, are not an option. This is a neighborhood type of bike. It may see some light touring/grinding too.

The only requirements is that they are tough rims and hubs. At least 32 hole (36 ideal), sealed bearings, 135mm rear and black as a color is OK but chrome/brushed is ideal.

Finding a donor bike would probably be your most economical solution. Look for a Deore, Exage, or Ritchey equipped mtb.

You can check your local coop too.

I can't complain about the Shimano Alivio hub / CR18 wheelset on my primary touring bike. While that wheelset was bought as a budget 700C set the CR18s are available in 26".

7 speed Deore or Deore DX laced to a decent rim

I have found a number of brand new 26", higher quality wheelsets on ebay for cheap. Unless there is a need to make it period correct, I would look for a new set as they are currently out of fashion and cheap.

Thanks, all!

My old Bridgestone had Shimano hubs, 130mm rear spacing. I rebuilt the hubs and laced with new stainless butted spokes and Mavic 317 rims. A super upgrade to what was on there. I put new Specialized Crossroads tires.
