What do you know about Stella bikes

I was walking in a hunk shop and notice a bike in the back room in bad shape tires where shot the front derailleur was missing and the cables need replacing but it was light really light so I asked how much $20 sold. It's a Stella bike made in France what do you know about it there isn't much on the net

...like many makers of the time, they produced a broad range of models. I've had two, one of the mid range and one of the top of the line with full Campy and a DB frame. There's not much in online catalogs. Their glory days were when they sponsored a race team with Louison Bobet as one of the stars.

Stella bicycles

There area few threads here that have about as much info as anywhere else.

Before he started Trek, Bevil Hogg imported and distributed Stella bikes.

This one pretty much looks like your typical, upper entry level, French bicycle from the early 1970s. It's pretty much equivalent to a Peugeot UO8, except it uses Weinmann brakes over MAFAC. I wouldn't say they are any better or worse that then the comparable models form Peugeot, Mootbecane, Gitane, Mercier, Jeunet, etc. However they do have a little more panache due to being a lesser known brand associated with one of cycling's great names.

....the first bike I ever owned that had a cotterless crank and some sort of butted tubing frame was a mid line Stella. I loved that bike like Stanley loved Stella.

There is an article in the recently published Cyclo Vintge magazine about Stella, Bobet, and the 1954 TdF. Link below will take you to the album. You are on your own for translation.

In my humble opinion, Stella bikes had the coolest font for their decals! Stella also made bikes for the snow machine company Arctic Cat, called Arctic. I would love to find one of the upper end Stella's
Cheers,

The Budget Bike Centre has several Stellas here. Not cheap but also it includes an Arctic Cat branded version.

There was a real nice one on CL up in the Northwest a few weeks ago. Very attractive price, too.
