Had a few 85's go through my hands and seem more drawn to them because it's my birth year. The only one I've kept and will be keeping for quite some time.

I have a number of MIEL bicycles from the mid-1980s.
Here's one with non-indexed Shimano N600 parts on a Columbus SL frameset.

I have a 1985 Fuji Sagres. It's a low end bike, but it has a surprisingly light triple butted frame. I've added downtube shifters, extension-free brake levers, modern 700c wheels, a (1970s) crank with alloy chain rings, and a few other upgrades. It ended up being not too expensive thanks to bike co-ops and used parts, and it's a nice, fun, comfortable bike. I believe 1985 was one of the last years Fujis were still made in Japan.

I would think an early Cannondale would be an appropriate addition. Although in my mind 1985 bikes are "modern".... the era of aluminum frames, indexed shifters, aero components and clipless pedals.

Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra, repaint by CyclArt. 3rd owner. Decided to take some liberty (as it's a repaint) for the sake of ridability, namely 48/34 crankset. (and always nice to have a friend in the kitchen). Century geometry, SLX, and tubies make it a cloud-like ride.

Dig that group and contrast. Don't know if you want them free for the taking, but I have an NOS pair of black curved Modolo d.t. shift levers. Composite type. I purchased them for an '85 Basso build but decided against using them. (Acquired some Campy period stuff from our own RobbieTunes.)

Fin de siècle of C & V.
State of the art 1985. Built in November 1985 (stamped on frame).
By 1986, it is outdated.
French aeronautical aluminum tubing, both threaded and bonded, and thus called “glued and screwed.” Seatpost is 25mm.
This bike was given to me by a friend-of-a-friend, who said he was going to trash it, but remembered I “liked old bikes.” Wow. He has an open beer tab with me for years to come.
It came with last-gasp friction Super Record, sew-ups and Victory hubs. I swapped out the wheel set for a Dura-Ace 7400 pair built by Wheelsmith in 1985. I had ‘em, and they're period correct.
The brake levers are not period correct, but so much more comfortable. Nice to get cables out of the way.
I’m truly a C&V rider, and this bike is the Newest, both in terms of the year made and my ownership. I've had it just over a month. It’s really, really very nice to ride! ! !

The bars are original, although tilted up some to give those nice ramps.
The ride is surprising. The angles are very tight. Those 25mm Contis just barely clear. I was considering the 26mm Compass tires, but the clearance is just too tight.
I was expecting a more flexy ride, but it is not. And I'm over 200 lbs. It has been a surprise to me, not to mention a great pleasure. It is a "go-fast" bike, fer sure.

85 was a very good year
Pics of 85 Eddy Merckx Corsa Extra with what I am told are very rare Mavic MA40s with "Mavic 85" logo? Bike is mainly super record equiped with a couple exceptions (pedals and brake levers)

I'll try to get more detailed pictures up soon. It's a good looking bike from 20 feet, but as you get closer you start to see the flaking decals & bad chrome. Still, it's a nice rider for a $25 thrift store rescue.
