I wondered the same thing. I recently got a 1990 black w/white splatter 990 and I've been considering what components to change out. I love what the OP did but its too flashy for my use. Mine gets chained at the store and at the trails and I've had bad luck with flashy items hanging around here (nice area its just thats typically where the riff-raff goes to do their misdeeds).

If it is a 7sp or above freehub it will accept a 9s cassette.

You will have to replace the 7sp freehub body with a 8/9/10. You may also have to play with the axle spacers and possibly redish the wheel.

I believe these Treks have 135mm spacing so redishing the wheel should not be necessary.

I have an 18" 930 and would love to try to do something similar however I'm 6'1, is the bike too small for me? I bought this bike off cl and knew nothing about bikes (still don't). Currently it seems to work ok for me but I had to raise the seats pretty high.

Well, i was going to share another steel trek i found that was being trashed but i still cant post photos here. I found a trek antelope 800 and built it into a little tourer too. Still working on my Singletrack 930.

I think that would be very small. I think the yellow trek i have is like a 17.5 and it is very small for me. I am 5'7".

Not so fast. With mtb drop bar conversions it's the top tube length that matters, not so much the seat tube. A lot of manufacturers had very long top tubes for even the small sizes. It makes sense to size down if adding drop bars to try to lessen the reach of a bike meant for flat bars, and then get a long seatpost. Having said that, I think that someone who is 6'1 should probably look at sizes larger than 18" as you mentioned.

Oh! Thanks for the input TenGrain. I did not know that. I just know standing over the top tube of mine makes it feel very small and when i look at my two bikes side by side the one is so much shorter than the other.

It's not as simple as just sizing down with a long seatpost. When I tried to convert a 90's MTB, a 20in had the bars too low and it was not comfortable. A converted 22in, which is the size I normally ride, was much better. In the end, I scrapped the project as my made for drop bar bikes just felt better with my long torso.

18" is likely a little small. 20" or 22" is likely more appropriate.

My first real bike that I bought with my own money was a 930SHX in this color.

The color is officially called electric plum. I loved that bike but eventually gave it up.

I was so hard on it but all it ever did was scratch. Toughest bike I've ever known.

I later bought an forest green one exactly like the OP, but I passed it on. These are wonderful bikes.

It looks like this thread is turning into a vintage Trek MTB appreciation thread. Here is my 1992 Trek 950 that I just finished rebuilding. The bike came to me with origin 8 v brakes that weren't that good. I replaced them with tektro CR 720 cantilevers that work great with kool stop pads. I really like the trekking bars and the 26 x 1.75 continental travel contact tires that I used on this bike. The trekking bars give me numerous good hand positions. I also used some planet bike century gel pads underneath the tape to add some xtra cush.

1992 Trek 930 Single track

Hey y’all. Quick question, I believe I have a 1992 930, the color way is red with purple decals. It’s lugged. So I’m trying to figure out if it’s a 92 or 93.

also it has a thread less rockshox Quadra 21r coil shock that is done for. So I’m looking to replace the fork. Does anyone know the steering tube measure in order for me to buy a new fork? Thank you!!

Vintage Trek will have your info. You can look through the catalogs or find it by serial number.

The fork you replace it with will have to be a suspension corrected one.^^^

That color scheme corresponds to a 1992.

We have two SingleTracks of that era (a 930 and a 950), and they both have oversize (1 1/8") forks.

The bike originally came with a rigid fork, so installing a conventional rigid fork should restore the original geometry.

Thank you all for the information! Very helpful. It is a 1992 with a 1 1/8 steering tube.

with this info I have a couple questions
I would like to ride this bike on the trails and therefore would like to have an air fork on it.

I realize it’s a bit crazy but would running a modern 27.5 fork (no judgment please ) be crazy? Small travel obviously, 80 or 100m. Would it even work?

or should I just get a older 26in air fork?

thanks for the help!

I built up the lugged 930 for my son, I replaced the Quadra fork with a Kona project 2, hard nose.
