Mafac racer attachment nut/vertical bolt
 

I need a vertical bolt attachment nut or the whole Mafac racer brake that has the nut on it for my old LeJeune. The rear brakes got to be vertically attached to the bike.

Looked already from ebay. Just the nut would be ok/cheaper...

Have you tried the local hardware store?

Yes. But I have to look abroad. Not a single part available here in Finland.

If anything else helps I have to consider to make it myself...

By vertical bolt do you mean that your brake is mounted with assembly 478E shown in this diagram?

Thread for this bolt is likely metric 6mm X 1.0 and widely available.

Ooops. I missed that you were in Finland. I will see what I can find here. I have the same setup on my Lejeune tandem.

I've got one or two laying around somewhere in my shop but doubt it would be cost-effective to ship it to you or I would.

They normally go for ~$15-$30 USD on eBay over here (that's for one fastener with all three pieces). I got a deal on a pair for $11 shipped last time I saw some on eBay.

I can look to see if I still have one, but again - probably not cost effective to ship. Make sure whatever you get matches (or is pretty damn close) to what you see in the pictures of that thread I just linked.

I really don't know what your situation is where you are located, but have you considered replacing the bolt and the nut? I looked at mine and it appears to be an M5 bolt. I test fitted a braze on M5 bolt I use to attach a bottle cage. Fit through the mount and the the brake bridge. It would just be a matter of finding a nut, bolt, and washer at an online store, which should not be hard knowing what size you need.

Thanks. The whole rear brake or just the bolt. I have one Mafac brake though it is missing both tightening bolts. Looks like my Lejeune is the only one in Finland that gas the vertical system. These models were brought here just a handful and mine could be the only surviving one from this model from the 70s

Yes. No need for the whole thing. Just the little nut and the bolt itself will do if someone sells it independently. Another option is to make it myself but that is not the first option for me. Seen that mussing part on velobase.com pages. Small part but fives a lot trouble.

I have considered different options. Looked from ebay too, but there were only two for sale. Out of my budget, especially the one with both brakes and calibers. Funny thing that the frame had the front Mafac racer brake still there when I got it. Truth is that anything can do of it makes the rear brake sturdy and save to brake, but first I try to find at least the small nut or piece from what the bolt goes through.

Thanks. The original part is the safest way to make sure that the brake works properly. And it surely gives the right distance to the rim.

No problem. I keep searching. Eventually it pops from somewhere, I hope. LeJeune is long project, others in the line before it.

Yes, that little nut/bolt 478 is missing from my bike, and actually the whole brake (Mafac racer). It is metric. The only ones I have seen here recently, were on sale on a Peugeot and similar Le Jeune. Should have bought the whole bike for getting that little piece (bikes were on sale for 475€ and 500€, so they were not for me).

I live in Finland, and the vertical bolt bikes are quite rare.

So you are missing the whole 478E assembly? I thought you were just missing the vertical nut and bolt.

I am missing the whole thing. But I believe that almost any rear brake fits with this nut to the frame.

I looked at this thread a while ago and thought to myself - "I have one of those somewhere". Fortunately I found the assembly a day or so ago. PM me if interested.

I finally got the little bolt system. I bought a whole bike where the vertical bolt was with Mafac Racer brakes, old Peugeot from mid 70s. Just for 25 dollars (20€)

Just found out that you might have the vertical bolt brake. I'm still interested, even that I now have one, but I have now two bikes with the vertical bolt system, the other being a Peugeot. I just kept a break reading the forum. Sorry I didn't notice this earlier.
