Pedal question...
 

Good morning,

I have a quick question regarding my old pedals on my C&V '85 Fuji Del Rey. They are Wellgo R173 cage pedals (I bought the toe clips & straps at Performance Bike a few weeks after I bought the old Fuji off Craigslist last year).

Anyway, as seen in the photo below, I want to replace the old worn out Wellgo pedals, as the left one (in the photo) is starting to have a weird rattling sound. No, it's not the BB, trust me... I checked. I used an adjustable crescent wrench and carefully took off the left pedal to examine it. It's like the internal bearings are going. You can hold the pedal in your hand and spin it around on its shaft, and hear an occasional "click" or rattle type of sound.

What would be a good replacement pedal? Stick with Wellgo or go with MKS or some other reputable cage type of pedal, so I can easily reattach the toe clips?

Oh, and don't recommend clipless... Sorry... Ain't happening... No, no, no, no, I won't and you can't make me! LOL... :lol:

Definitely MKS. They're high-quality, good looking, good variety of designs, and won't empty your wallet.

I always liked platform pedals, especially if you are riding in conventional shoes.

Really any rat trap or quill pedal will be fine. It's a personal preference thing.

FYI your strap is on backwards. I guess that's fine if you never pull them tight, but they are easier to use right side up.

But... if you pull up on the black plastic piece, the whole strap loosens. Pull the end piece on top, and it "should" tighten. Are they really on backwards, or am I suffering from brain damage? LOL.. :lol:

Since you use toeclips and straps, I'd suggest the MKS "Urban Platform," a modern take on the old Lyotard "Marcel Berthet" design:

Yeah those are good ones. They are similar to the MKS platforms I linked to, but fancier ($$).

I used to love my old Lyotard platforms. They were the best touring pedal BITD. Unlike the MKS copies, the Lyotards allowed the use of cycling cleats or normal shoes. Given that virtually no one uses slotted cleats anymore, I guess MKS made a reasonable choice.

That said, I'm thinking of getting some slotted cleats, for my old bikes.

1. Note proper strap routing.

2. I really like these because I ride in running shoes and the little nubs would always get caught on the quills of other pedals and my wide feet would be uncomfortable on the narrow rat traps. These mostly smooth platform pedals are easier to get into and more comfortable.

GR-10 is a little wider and has a little more surface area than GR-9

I have since redone my toe clip straps on the old Wellgo pedals, and you all are correct. Now they loosen and tighten like they should. My bad... :o

I like the MKS Sylvan pedals, as I assume that's what's supposed to be original, stock, OEM, from Fuji back in 1985.

I have been riding MKS Sylvan Prime quill pedals on my main bike for several years. I have moved the pedals from bike to bike over the years. First a Mercier, then a Raleigh, then a Trek, now my VO. They are great pedals. I run them with MKS deep toe clips (they fit my normal shoes easily).

Another vote here in favor of MKS Sylvan quills.

The MKS platforms look intriguing -- I may try a pair on my commuter.

I still wish someone would re-introduce the Avocet Touring shoes, which had steel shanks and rubber soles with transverse cleat-like ridges. Best all-round general purpose shoes ever!

Pedal comfort is a bit like saddle comfort. You have to try a few to know what you like.

I could never use quill pedals as my feet are much too wide for them. The quill sticks into the middle of my foot.

I wanted to like platform pedals, but for some reason, they hurt, too. I can't figure it out.

I like rattrap pedals.

Obviously in this thread, we can't all agree on what's best.

I just got back from a very easy, very gentle, 6.25 mi ride on my '85 Fuji. You remember from some of my other posts, I pulled my lower back a bit back in June, and it started causing mild sciatica in my right leg. So, I'm slowly getting myself back after a few weeks of taking it easy.

Anyway, I always wear my Adidas running shoes when I'm on my Fuji. The running shoes fit great on the old worn out Wellgo pedals and toe clips. Now that the straps are the proper way, I can easily loosen them and snug them up. Thank you! :thumb:
