1981 Schwinn Super Le Tour

Picked up a one owner Schwinn Super Le Tour from 1981 for $75.00 Nice clean bike and it rides smooth.

cool! I just build one of these, around the same model year, although the one I worked on was yellow!

I put in a tourney BB, it is 68.5x122.5 IIRC (the axle was bent), rewrapped the bars, new tires and tubes, and a new saddle, brake cables, and pads. My friend rides it as a "bar bike" and it gets compliments all the time. The frame is reasonably well built, not too heavy, and his appeared to have had the wheels replaced at some time, so it rode very well. Have fun with it!

The bottom bracket spindle was bent? I didn't know that was possible.

My other Schwinns are a 1977 Le Tour III and my Varsity that I bought new in 1978 and recently changed the tires on.

Isn't the Le Tour iii a 1978 only model (coming from a Le Tour ii owner)?

Could be but I seem to remember that it had a 77 date code. I'll check again as my son has adopted it and has it at his house. This restored one seems to indicate 77 as well. John's Bicycle Restorations: Thomas's 1977 Schwinn Le Tour III Restoration in the Schwinn Awesome Orange!

Could be that they crossed over a bit.

If it were built in late 1977, it would be an early built 1978 model year.

Wait a minute! The Le Tour Luxe had a triple in '84. The early eighties Super Le Tours were 12-speeds...I think. I have an '81 Fuji S-12-S that actually came as an 18-speed...black & chrome like the Schwinn...beautiful combo...maybe the Schwinn was upgraded to a triple? Really nice!! Great catch!!!

Thanks. Yes, it is 18 speed. The guy that I got if from, his wife's family were Schwinn dealers for many years in Pontiac Mi. Scarlett's Cycle shop. I think they ordered it that way or possibly upgraded it in house. When I first saw the add I thought the 18 speed was a typo but ...
