If black Competitions are difficult to sell then lavender are darn near impossible. The previous owner of this Raleigh begged me to buy this after he tried for months to sell on CL. As you can see some components have been changed on this 1972 Competition. I actually sold it once but told the buyer he could return it if not totally happy. Yeah, you guessed right. It was mine again within 24 hours. Time to try CL again.

so mine is pre-GS?

Yes, since it is pre 1977, which was when The Competition GS was introduced.

I will have to say I have never seen or heard of a lavender Competition. I can see almost no original equipped parts on it, so that may explain the value discrepancy? I've also never seen one with a "Competition" decal on the chainstay? Are you sure that's original paint? Is the head tube black?,,,,BD

Would I be correct in thinking that it was called the competition GS because it came equipped with Nuovo Gran Sport parts?

Bikedued 07-29-16 06:37 PM

I am fairly certain that is the case. I don't believe the old stand alone Gran Sport, Grand Sports, Gran Sports, etc model had Campy Gran Sport though. That's another Raleigh quirk, The Gran Sport spelling. I have a Grand Sports frame, but I believe the other two spellings are out there, if I'm not mistaken.,,,BD

Some info on the 'lilac and blue' one year only Competition.

1971 Raleigh Competition

This ride needs a Brooks saddle. Luckily, I met a guy who was selling a silver/grey Competition a while ago. The frame turned out to be too big for me. As I was about to depart from out meeting, I asked, "do you have any parts?" "Oh yes, right here in the back seat, you never asked about parts." So, I got a 1976-77 Brooks Pro, NOS LOOk pedals in the box, a bunch of tools stamped "Sugino", some campy hoods NOS.....etc. Always good to grabbem' when the opportunity arises.
