That's a Nervex bottom bracket shell, but that's all I'm willing to venture without more information. Is it metric thread? If so, likely French manufacture. Looks like a cottered spindle in the bottom bracket. What do the faces of the cups look like?

Elsewhere, what are the head lugs, fork crown, and dropouts? Any chrome or remnants of chrome?

That looks very British to me.

non-fixie 08-11-16 04:08 PM

Crespera lugs. Carlton would be my guess.

EDIT: it seems that Bocama and Haden made similar-looking lugs, so not necessarily a Carlton. But I'm sure it's British.

Jeddles100 08-11-16 04:42 PM

what era would you put it at?

John E 08-11-16 05:14 PM

Having never seen a right fork lamp holder on a non-British bicycle, I concur regarding country of origin. The lack of water bottle mounts suggests 1960s, possibly a decade earlier or later, at most.

zukahn1 08-11-16 07:04 PM

I would say late 50's British based on the type lugs 56-60 or so long seat stay caps, Benelux drops and somewhat relaxed geometry. Most likely started life as a light touring model Carlton.

Agreed. Particularly with the lamp bracket on the right fork blade:

The purple fits quite nicely. Often combined with off-white or even green, it was very popular BITD.

At the risk of being blasphemous: post the bike on Retrobike. There are some very knowledgeable members there, when it comes to identifying frames like this one. Ask for Spokesmann and Midlife.

Jeddles100 08-12-16 03:19 PM

thank you i will try retrobikes :)

Big Block 08-12-16 03:19 PM

Lugs could be Nervex Serie Legere Model 48/161
fork crown is different. I have a 1952 frame with these lugs, also with a different fork crown. It was not unusual.
Unsure why Carlton has been mentioned. The frame number is not in the form listed on this site
And can you confirm that the frame number is different to the fork number by 3000. I have some recollection of that being a trait of one frame builder.
With a frame number so large your chances of identifying it are strong.
I agree with asking Retrobikes, and you could also ask the Classic Rendezvous group but please carefully follow the rules. It is Dale's garage, and he has clearly stated rules.

Is there any paint under the purple?
or is there the smallest metallic fleck to it?

T-Mar 08-12-16 05:03 PM

Agreed, it's almostly certainly British based on the dropouts and lighting boss on the right fork blade. The Cyclo 902 dropouts appeared circa 1955, so it's no older than that. I doubt it goes very far, if any, into the 1960s.

Jeddles100 08-13-16 05:38 AM

thanks guys for all your help, regarding the frame and fork numbers they are the same 730 4114.
since the suggestion of carlton ive been researching frame numbers and cant find anything similar.
purple seems to be the base colour, the cream paint on top is defiantly a sloppy over coat. the purple has a metallic tinge to it.

polychromatic purple would be how it was described when new
see the paint colours at Mercian Colours

I agree that those series Nervex are very likely what you have here, since it's a Nervex BB the connection is stronger. Interested to learn what this turns out to be...

Not sure about a Flyer but a Corsa has pressed dropouts
