Dawes Galaxy

Hello,
Am new to Bike Forums. I just bought a very clean Dawes Galaxy for $140 w/a green fade paint job, Atom hubs w/Weinmann concave rims. GB bars, Suntour Cyclone ders, and Suntour ratcheted shifters clamped to downtube, Stronglight 99bis cranks, SR Laprade seat post, MKS quill pedals. I am interested if those components are original. The sidepull brakes definitely are not original, does anyone know what brand center pulls were original? What was original saddle and seat post? It came w/Avocet W2 saddle--I put on an old Brooks Pro which was big step up. I would love to see a pic as original, and perhaps know year made. Am guessing from early eighties. Would love to exchange thoughts w/you out there. Took it out today for a short shakedown cruise and like the bike very much. Thank you.

We'd probably be able to tell better with pics, but I have a circa 79ish galaxy that has a lower-end Suntour drivetrain and crank than what yours is equipped with.

Weinmann brakes, Simplex Prestige, chrome seatpost, and steel rims were standard on mine.

Several Dawes Galaxy bicycles have come my way over the years. This Dawes Galaxy is fitted as sold, all original components still present...

Of course, I thought or think that this one is pretty original also...

And this one looks to be original also...

The point is there seems to be some variety in original parts fitted to the bikes, base, probably on parts availability and the year the bike was made. That said, some of the stuff on the OP's bike is not original, in my opinion.

you have a great bike there, and it will be improved by the Suntour derailleurs.

Thank you for the many useful replies and pics. I realize the components varied w/the years, was particularly wondering what brakes it came with. The answer seems to be Weinmann. The Gran Compes on it now, not original, don't work very well, and are out of character w/rest of bike. I'm going to put on some Mafac Racers that haven't seen the light of day in twenty years for now, maybe find some Weinmanns eventually. And thank you for the pics of the head badges. Mine is rather plain. I am a real sucker for headbadges. I once owned a Legnano Model Roma Olympiad that had a head badge to die for. But it went to a new owner years ago. Am posting some pics of my bike. Thanks again.

I bought one new in 1971. It was stolen a week later. It was just like the first one in post 4, but the brake levers were placed higher on the bars.

Between the headbadge and non-aero levers I'd guess this bike is an '84ish model.
