Olympic Discovery with the Caveman

I just got back from an overnight trip to Port Angeles that was prompted by @Lascauxcaveman who had mentioned "So...when ya coming over to ride with me?".

On Wednesday, I set up camp at the Heart O’ the Hills Campground located beside the Hurricane Ridge Road within the Olympic National Park. I got a late start, and had only about 4 hours of daylight to play with so climbed up to Hurricane Ridge
Tunnels 1 and 2 by NBend, on Flickr

then turned off onto the Obstruction Point Road which I had been curious about for a long time.

The dirt road drops down steeply from the Ridge, then slowly begins a climbing traverse up to Obstruction Point.

It was very beautiful made even more so by the evening light as the sun started to get low in the sky.

I had to turn around after about 4 or 5 miles in order reach camp before it got dark.

It always astounds me how much altitude is gained on Hurricane Ridge! About 30 minutes of high speed descending back to camp :-)

Beautiful country, great photos. Seeing snow capped peaks, what elevation were you at?

That last pic, a gust of wind and your bike would be sliding down the mountain!

The next morning I broke camp and drove into Port Angeles to meet “Caveman” Tim at his Hotel. I waited for him by the Registration Desk as he got ready.

Tim had a great route planned for us! He avoided the busiest roads by taking back roads (paved and dirt), double and single track out to this Moms house on Lake Crescent.

After lunch there was more to the same creative use of roads and trails over to the Strait of Juan De Fuca and the trip eastward back to Port Angeles.

Thanks, I think the Visitors Center is at 5100 feet or thereabouts. No worries on a blow down. Winds were calm and the other side is not as steep as it appears in the picture :-)

"Gassed" kind of sums it up for me, alright. Trying to keep up with Matt on about 4 hours sleep, in hot weather, (insert all the other excuses here).

Good fun though, riding with a guy who really likes to take a road bike down some rough single track:

(Segment of the Olympic Adventure Trail)

And gravel:

(Little River Road)

And he'll even buy you a round of cokes halfway through the ride:

(Joyce General Store - same location since 1911)

Come to think of it, he bought the beer at the end of the ride, too.

Matt, you can come back anytime.

Looks like it was a blast, all of it.

And this shot is awesome:

One of these years we'll make a trip to the PNW for some biking adventure, and maybe I'll coerce some of you to be guides!

Also, anyone interested in more pics of the Obstruction Point road, I posted some awhile back here on the "Where'd you ride today?" thread. I drove my car partway up (past the difficult climbing parts, natch) and probably started right about where Matt had to turn back due to the failing light.

Great write-up, although I was anticipating a Nishiki story after reading your title.

I'm beginning to think that The Caveman only has one pair of shorts.

Of course, @northbend isn't seen without his Cino Eroica jersey, although I did meet him at a bar for a beer once. He was dressed in civies.

Hmm, the photographic evidence is overwhelm... Naw, there's gotta be another pair around here somewhere.

Honestly, I don't actually know the exact number of plain khaki shorts I own -- same as bicycles.

Glorious.

Stopping by work today on my day off to try to convince the boss to give me a weekend off in September to head down to Port Angeles after a too-long stretch away.

Girlfriend and I were thinking of riding the Olympic Discovery on the other side of PA, as our current level of fitness might better suit riding 'Little Oklahoma' than climbing Hurricane Ridge. We'll have to chat with Tim about it.

Thanks for the awesome Pics, love the PNW. The Olympic peninsula is stunning. Love it there. Hurricane ridge is a world class climb. Victoria road cyclists have a Canada Day tradition: go to the US and ride up hurricane ridge. It's a blast.

Am getting ready for Cino and am curious about the gearing and tires you guys were both running on that ride.
