Current Tubular rim for vintage bike
I'm riding a 1974 Bob Jackson with tubular tires and would like to lace up an extra set of wheels.
I've noticed that the profile of vintage tub rims fit my Vittoria Pave sew ups poorly on the edges - gaps on edge between tire and rim. Ambrosio nemesis rims work great. I'd like to find another, maybe alloy colored, lighter set or rims. Need to be wider for 25-28mm tire. Anyone have luck with anything?
Thanks -t

Not many options, but Velocity Major Toms should work nicely:
Velocity Wheels - Hand Made in USA
They are not classic box section rims.

I like the Paves too. The 27mm ones fit pretty well on my GL330s, but if I had to replace them I'd go with HED C2... not exactly vintage looking but not deep profile either.

If I wanted to go high-end tubular now, your ride would be very close! (I'd still go lighter spokes.) Wheels like yours are a joy to climb on! (Good thing for me is that memory is 40 years old, not fresh and my "almost" wheels - MA-4s and Clement synthetic Paris Roubaix sew-ups) 20 years old.)

Not questioning your desire for a new rim, but never heard of gaps between tire & rim. Got a pic? I run 27mm Veloflex on 2 sets vintage wheels without issue, wider rims are likely not needed for 25-28s.

Just don't want to see anybody get hurt from a tire mount....
I road on tubulars for about 12 years and really liked them.... always thinking about going back, but would like nice brake track and OC rim... nobody makes it. When I look at this "mountain bike" it makes me want to go back to the sewups. I think it's easier and faster to change a tire on the road.

Tub gaps
One solution is to try different tires (maybe looking for something rounder?) but I really like the Paves for their cornering, ride etc. Also, experimenting w different tire/rim combos gets expensive!
I recall having the same problem back in the day as well on some rim/tire combos.
I ordered a set of the Ambrosia Nemesis 36 hole rims and they fit really well, but are a bit heavy. I'd like to try a a really light rim but finding in alloy, 36 hole is proving to be a bit of a quest.
36 hole because I have Campy record hubs with that drilling.
Thanks for the reply -

Hmm, I'll have to think about the GL330s - good fit on tire then?

Those major toms might do the trick - I see they have the 36h in black - thanks for the tip!

I pick up GL330's when I run into them, 36 or 32 for my Campy HF hubs and Mavic 50x hubs. They have worked well for me but I am concerned about longevity. Maybe I just won't live than long with what I have in stock!

GP4s also came in 36° - pretty much the same rims as GL 330s except a little more stout.

@83cannondale, I'm pretty sure I have a set of 280/330's laced to Campy Record hubs around that I no longer need.

Hi jiangshi - what is 280 - is that a rim? Looking to sell set? I do have several sets of campy high and low flange hubs plus I enjoy building wheels so would like to get just rims.
Thanks for the input though.

I believe that the pros by and large road the GP4s because they held up to a lot of abuse.
Personally if looking for new tubular wheels, I'd put up a wtb ad in the C&V forum. You never know what might turn up.

I've been riding clinchers but this thread makes me think I need to dust off some of my tubular wheels and start to use them. They ride so nicely.
