I have a '73 GR, mostly period 'correct' but for aero levers, and I have to say...your bike looks great! It's a classic from the era but there are lots of good condition originals around, so why not use one with rough paint as a platform? The powder coat and your paint choices look simply amazing. Makes me think of doing something similar with the right frame...

I'm resurrecting @Andy_K's thread to present another Motobecane Grand Record extreme makeover:
My local @gugie-ficazion-er, @scarlson, did the frame mods, and I've set it up with 650B x 38mm wheels (it would easily fit 42mm), Honjo fenders, a Shimergo 10/8 drivetrain (Campy Veloce 10-speed brifters, Shimano Ultegra RD, Shimano 8-speed cassette), MAFAC canti brakes, Stronglight 99 crankset, Nitto technomic sanded down to fit a French steerer, V-O bars, Brooks B17 w/ Ti rails, Nitto M12 front rack. Oh, and that front bag is a cheap Rubbermade cooler. I had to pick up a bunch of books.
I need to figure out what I want to do about refinishing the frame, whether to go the slick Groody Bros route or rattle can it or have it PC-ed locally. I really like the red lugs on the original, so I'd want to retain the red and black paint scheme.
Ride is smooth and quite neutral. Brakes are taking turns squealing like mad and then becoming perfectly silent, so I'll need to attend to that.

^ That looks great. I don’t get the drivetrain though. Is there a benefit to the 10/8 mongrel setup, or is it more about using parts on hand and getting them to cooperate? I’ve nothing against it, mind you - just curious.

I have Shimergo setups on lots of bikes. Big advantage is versatility. Shimano 8 speed drivetrain mates perfectly with Campy 10-speed brifters (as does Shimano 9 speed w/ Campy 11). Those Veloce ergo brifters were sold online for relatively small money by Ribble in the UK and can be matched with a wide range of Shimano 8-speed components. I've done that with Dura Ace, Ultegra, Deore, and XTR. All worked perfectly.
