Rehabbing late 90's Trek 800 Antelope

Our daughter has asked me to put her Trek 800 Antelope with the distinctive yellow and green paint scheme. I'm in the process of going through the whole bike and making decisions about what has to go, what can be used after getting rid of the detritus, and what just has to be replaced. The bike was bought used quite a few years ago. I find that some parts were replaced with compatible parts. The brakes are Shimano C-10 series and are usable after cleanup, cable replacement, and new shoes. The rear derailleur is a Shimano Altus C-20 and the FD is Shimano, but not the Altus version. This makes me think that some parts were replaced for resale of the bike. It was a fine ride for her when she was in high school. I would like to resurrect it for her for Christmas. I really think both derailleurs will function fine after a good cleaning/lube and reinstall with new cables and housings all around.

This brings me to the question I must answer before beginning the project full bore. The bike has a triple crank and a 6 speed free wheel. The components the LBS added when they refurbished the bike for resale were obviously compatible because the bike worked great for many years. The shifters are SRAM MRX 200-10 grip shifters. They must have the 2:1 actuation ratio required to shift the Shimano Altus rear derailleur. I want to buy a NOS set of Shimano Altus C-20 FD and RD with cables and grips to hold in reserve or to put on now and hold the originals for backups. However the listing says this C20 Altus rear derailleur is for a 7 speed freewheel. The prescient question is: Will the SRAM grip shifters shift the C20 rear derailleur (designed for 7speed freewheel ) 6 times? I'm hoping the answer is yes. Can anyone make my day and says that it will work fine, or is there an ugly truth I have to accept and try to find a 6spd C-20 Altus.

Thanks for any input. I'm learning this bike maintenance stuff on the fly. But I really do like it a lot and enjoy tackling most of our bike maintenance all by myself. Hopefully by this time next year the learning curve will be flatter. LOL!!

I'm confused. Are you replacing the derailleurs or not?
As long as you use a 6 speed shifter, that derailleur will work. 6 and 7 speed derailleurs are generally interchangeable, and as you said yourself, it has been fine for years.

FWIW a yellow/green Antelope 800 is likely a 1993 - Trek Bike Models by Year and Color

7 will work with 6 speed.

Those old SRAM MRX200 will crap out soon. Wrk101 and I find the shifters below to be great value and foolproof, not to mention easier for the rider to make a gear selection. I just put them on an old Giant Boulder guest bike and am delighted in the ease of shifting.
