The "Repack" race posters

These images were the first advertising of any kind for a "mountain bike" event, before that term had been coined.

Encouraged by Joe Breeze, I have Photoshopped the original images of the Repack race posters from 1978 and 1979. The original posters were cheap photocopies, but the enhanced images are stunning. So I will post them here.

I did not print these posters for advertising. Two years after the first race on October 21, 1976 (40 years ago last month), it had become a "thing." I decided to create documentary evidence of my involvement in case anyone made a competing claim. The artist was my roommate, Pete Barrett, a cartoonist who also did the graphics for the MountainBikes business cards and stationery.

The second poster advertises two events, the "Appetite Seminar" ride on Thanksgiving, and a race a few days later. The poster could just be inverted after the first event.

This one was the "Evening Magazine" race, filmed by a KPIX crew and shown nationally in 1979. Some of the footage turned up in Klunkerz. (Hi Bill)

Those are awesome ! The artwork reminds me too of the early advertising illustrations for bike equipment.

Those are awesome!

Also:

Either your cartoonist friend wasn't a cyclist or the guy in the Nov. 26th poster is riding an Australian bike... The derailleur is on the wrong side!

Those were interesting times alright, changed the face of everything bicycle-wise. Turns out mountain biking wasn't the fad I had predicted it would be at the time.
