Bolt removal
I just got this new RD. The hinge bolt is a little stick and I need to remove it, clean it, and lube it. How do I get it out?

Looks like you need a special tool that holds those two slots on the backing nut, to unscrew the mounting bolt from it. I've got the same derailleur with the same problem; just haven't got around to trying to fix it.

Tack weld a small bolt into the stripped head if they are two separate pieces as it appears. Oh yea. I can't tell but don't think it is aluminum.

A Park Tool pin spanner will suffice unless the nut is really stuck on there, I've used one successfully for this exact job:
Pin Spanner | Park Tool |
Just use a pin spanner, or the opened end of a needle nose pliers, to hold the bushing nut slots and turn the bolt on the front with a 6mm allen key.

Mount the pliers in a vise for stability. ;)
That's what I did when I made this tool from some scrap, about 15 minutes ago. (Love my Dremel!) http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/d...s/IMG_5080.jpg We'll call this Suntour Special Backing Nut Remover #cvman-RD-001  primo123, let me know if you'd like to borrow it, I can mail it to you. But you (and I, too) should just get a pin spanner like everyone else says to. _____________ NOW that I've got my mounting bolt removed, de-gunked, re-lubed and back to gather, can someone tell me how you're supposed to mount this thing tight enough to stay on a dropout RD hanger and still have it pivot around the mounting bolt? The only way I can see it working is with a backing nut on the other side of a thin claw hanger (which it came with). Is this one not designed to work on an integrated hanger? |

Or, mount the 6mm hex in the vise, and work from the other end.

While not up to the Lascaux artists esthetic standards the cvman-RD-001 is certainly fit for purpose.
