Refreshing cables/housing questions
I want to replace the cables/housing on my Panasonic. It has aero brake levers and indexed DT shifters, so only a small section of shifter cable housing going from the chainstay to the RD. I'm looking at going from yellow to orange, which is not a color I'd use on any of my other bikes, so I just need it for this one bike. Right now the shifting and braking seem fine, so functionally it's all working at least adequately, and I'm not sure I absolutely need to change them. My options:
I can buy the Jagwire Road Pro Complete kit, for about $34, and have a huge piece of leftover shifter housing.
I can buy the Velo Orange brake kit for $10, and Shimano stainless shifter cables for $5.50. Would it work to use a piece of the brake kit housing for that small section of shifter housing, even with the different internal diameter?
I also have some leftover SRAM black shifter housing, which I could use in the second option, though I like the little splash of color from matching cables.
Thoughts?

You should not use brake housing for indexed shifting. Brake housing is coiled and is compressible. Shifter housing for indexed shifting has wires running longitudinally to resist compression. When housing compresses, you lose precision in the amount of cable you move.

Brake housing - particularly when in tight radiuses - can compress a little. Maybe enough to mess with indexed shifting.
Worth a try perhaps.
Another option is to look for some heat-shrink tubing in a nice colour to go over a regular Black cable.

Thanks, imprecise shifting would drive me crazy. I guess I'll spend the extra $ for the Jagwire kit.

Interesting idea, though I'm not sure I could find a good color match.

I have a bunch of Jagwire orange shifter housing and will happily mail you a section.
Shoot me your address and I'll drop it in the mail.
Merry Early Christmas!

Rivendell is a good place to get mix and match cables and pieces of housing.
Of LBS is also good - they have spools and can cut anything you need.

You probably don't want to hear at this point that you can cancel Amazon orders if you do it right quick.
But don't feel bad, now you have leftovers for future projects. Or perhaps some soul will need a bit and you can drop it in the mail for them.

(OK, they actually are pretty great, but not for stuff like colored shift cables )

I've 'experimented' on my commuter bike, which sees a LOT of KMs in all weathers.
I have found that I can always revive cables (always teflon-coated Jagwire Road Pro) by removing them from the RD, stripping the housing and giving the inner a quick wipe with Degreaser and thinners, and get the shifting back to near-as-dammit new.
This way I get a 2 or 3 years out of the Jag cables. I leave the RD cable longer than normal to clip off the ferrule and feed it back through with a new cleanly cut end.
I've also - and ths is the relevant bit - used brake housing for the final loop to the rear derailleur, which I always replace when reviving the cable, and no degredation in shifting performance has been observed. It ran 2x8 for years and is now 2x10 Tiagra.
I should mention that I have an inline barrel adjustor by the STi shifter so if it's ever reluctant to shift up the cassette then this gets a quarter turn. I cannot say if any imprecision in the system is due to cable stretch or housing compression.
I'm not necessarily recommending my approach, which I am aware is unorthodox, just saying it works for me.
I find that the mini-V brakes sieze up and stop working before the brake cables and housing need replacement, but that's another story.
Cheers all
Simon
