Peugeot 1981? super sport

Hello all,

I have always been fond of the Peugeot bikes, although I have not studied them in depth I have thought of some day owning one.

At a local market on sunday I stumbled upon this Peugeot Super sport, thought it looked like it was in fair shape and went for it. So below is my first vintage bike:

The guy who sold me the bike was certain it was from 1974, not quite sure why he was so sure, might have gotten duped a bit.

The 7 digit serial number could indicate that its from the 70's I have understood, however the wheel hubs are stamped with "8 81", which would mean week(or month?) 8 in 1981?

It also shows most resemblance with the early 80's Peugeots from what i can tell when looking at catalogs at bikeboompeugeot.

The forks should however be chromed?

The stickers say "made in France" and "Fabrique par cycles Peugeot" which would mean french and not canadian super sport, right?

Some additional information:

Pedals: Lyotard
Stem: Peugeot
Seat: Peugeot
Brakes: Maafac
Brakes on the handle (not sure of the technical term): Weimann
Transmition: Simplex, not sure what model.
Rims: Normandy or something like that.

Hoping you gurus could share some wisdom with me, is it an early 80's Peugeot and what are your thoughts about these models?

Kind regards

Aleksander

Hi,

I somehow deleted the original post when i was editing it.

I bought this Peugeot super sport the other day. The guy who sold it to me was convinced it was a 1974 Peugeot, not knowing much about Peugeots I assumed he could be right. I thought the bike was in good shape and went for it .

After I had purchased the bike I got eager to find out what year this bike really was from. After reading on this forum, "mytenspeeds" and "bikeboompeugeot" I have concluded that this is an early 80s Peugeot.

I am hoping some of you gurus could help me verify it, and also if possible could share your experience with these models.

Some information:

The wheel hubs: Normandy, marked with "08 81"
Serial number: 7 digits, shown above
Brakes: Mafac and weinmann
Transmition: Simplex
Seat: Peugeot
Handle bar: Peugeot

It says made in France and produced by cycles Peugeot so I understand it is the french version and not canadian.

Hello Aleksander,

I looked at the serial number on the white label. Based on other numbers on white labeled Peugeots that I have seen, your number fits in the year 1981.
There should also be a frame number, which will contain information about the year and month the frame was manufactured. The frame number is probably stamped into the rear dropout on the non drive side of the bicycle.

Hi again,

Thanks for helping me out Negurah and Hummer. I will check the rear dropout on the non drive side of the bicycle as you suggest Hummer .

Hi again,

So i checked out the rear dropout. It was a bit poor lighting and some rust but I managed to take this picture.

I believe it says:

8(or B?)103570 and perhaps there are some more digits, but it is hard to say for sure.

Hi Aleksander,

thanks for posting the picture of the serial number.

I think it reads: B1035707. This is a common format for a Peugeot Serial number.

The 1 is for 1981 year of manufacture. The next 03 is for the month of March.

No, I think it's a UE8. UE is a touring model with fenders and rack and lights. 8 means cottered crank.
