Shining up the 1972 Chrome Paramount
 

Thanks for the advice on my newly arrived Paramount. I worked on it a few hours yesterday morning- started at 6 a.m. and didn't even stop for breakfast as I was having so much fun.

So I would like to share some photos of the progress. There is plenty more to do, but nothing too overwhelming and for that I am glad!

The list of things I need to finish up are below. If anybody can give insight or has a good source, I'd appreciate it very much.
A) missing one Campagnolo pedal cap. The other has raised letter "Campagnolo Patent"
B) chain is a bit worn, looking for information on what chain would be most like the original
C) needs original brake pad holders. Presently it has some more modern looking brake pads. I have several of the NOS Campy brake blocks in black, but no holders. If anybody would like to trade a set of holders for a set of four Campy brake blocks, that would be great.
D) the tubular rims are mismatched. Front is labeled Mavic Championatt du Monde and rear is labeled Schwinn approved. Hubs are both high flange Campy, so I'm guessing the front rim was replaced with the Mavic sometime in its life.
E) Right brake lever has some deep scratches, more than I can polish out. It is Campy with no holes in lever.
F) Has Alredo Binda toe straps but the leather is shot.

So that's the list now. I may be overdoing it in my quest, but I have lusted "in my heart" for a nice Paramount like this since the Carter administration!

Thanks very much! Yes, the original seat tube decal was on the bike but so much of it was missing, I gave up and ordered new decals from the guy on eBay. I put on the seat tube decal this morning. The quality was excellent and the decal was identical in all respects, such as size, font, color, etc. It really took great care to avoid tearing the decal, but I got lucky and even was able to wrap it in the same direction as the original to overlap slightly on the backside of the seat tube.

This has gotten my courage up and I'll replace the downtube decals this week.

I have a pair. I lever is a bit scarred & the other has a few very minor scracthes. Not the complete brake handle, but levers only. I removed them to replace them w/ SR type w/ holes. If you're polishing them out, the better one wil do fine. The other, not so much.

Funny thing is, I haven't looked at them for close to 20 or so years & just happened to pull them out yesterday while looking for something else...

That is one nice and shiny ride, I wish I had one just like it.

I thought mine was the cleanest newest on the planet.. YOU may have me beat!

With the help of Rich (1 Lugnut), I have a nice brake lever on its way to replace the scratched up one. If anyone else can help with the other items above I would appreciate it! (I'm willing to pay fair prices for any parts, so please don't think I looking for donations to the cause!)

I was going to ask if you had kept the tubular wheels or if it was converted to clinchers, but you answered the question. I recently converted my '71 P13 back to tubulars and the ride is wonderful! I was amazed by the difference from the 27" Pasellas, which I felt was a nice ride in the first place.

On to your search/questions:

B) Chain: I'm not a purest so I run modern SRAM or KMC 8 speed chains on my Paramounts. They do aid shifting slightly due to their greater side to side movement which is designed for the 8 speed cassette. [MENTION=226065]Metacortex[/MENTION] or [MENTION=38510]Scooper[/MENTION] can probably give you original spec, but any Regina chain from the early '70s would be more than close to original.

C) Campagnolo Brake Pad Holders: I believe I have what you need in my stash of parts. I'll need to dig some and will try to do so in the next few days. My email is my user name plus the ubiquitous G-Mail ending.

D) Tubular Rims: Again, scooper and metacortex can nail this spec but IIRC the Schwinn Approved rim is original. Finding a matching replacement can be found. Watch ebay closely. But matching the Mavic would be an appropriate replacement.

Chrome Dominates!

I hate being "that guy" but...

I've always hated the totally preventable damage of scratches on the top of the stem and saddle from flipping the bike upside down resting on the stem and saddle. This is a bike you do NOT want that damage on.

There are rules about this, you know.

Oh no, I see that I violated Rule #49, flagrantly, and memorialized it with a photo :eek:. My only defense is I inverted my beloved bike with dignity, and lowered it to our living room floor as gently as the first downy snowflake of a Virginia winter.
