No conflict with The Rose Bowl Vintage Ride and the Rose Parade
The Rose Bowl Vintage Ride and the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl game are never held on the same day. The Vintage Ride is always held on a Sunday and the Rose Parade is never held on a Sunday.
From the Pasadena Star-News:
"Thou shalt not hold the Rose Parade on a Sunday.
Thus spake Tournament of Roses officials in 1893, the first time New Year’s Day fell on the Lord’s Day. That year, organizers decided to move the New Year’s festivities to Jan. 2 in order to avoid frightening horses tied outside local churches and disrupting worship services.
In keeping with this tradition, the 134th Rose Parade and 109th Rose Bowl game will be held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2023."
The weather forecast is 64 degrees and glorious! Hope to see you all there in the New Year!
Regards,
Chuck Schmidt

I'm torn... There is a new year self supported century starting at Belmont shore in Long Beach which i was going to participate in, I think I'll do a 123 miles to mark the date. Have fun out there guys and gals, get the new year started off in the right gear
and may all your return home routes be full of tail winds.

Sunday there might be a parking guard at the Aquatic Center parking lot entrance. In the past, if you tell him that you are there to swim and he'll let you in.
Otherwise it is just as easy to park in the neighborhood just to the east and ride down to the parking lot where we meet. Remember the parade and football game are never held on a Sunday so there is no conflict there. Weather prediction is 62 and sunny with clouds.
See you there.
Regards,
Chuck

^^^^ Never trust the weather person.....raining really hard but perhaps it will clear. Ride rain or shine to bring in the NY. You may want to bring a parka.
Best, Ben

Local weather says Pasadena area rain should clear by 3am at the latest, should be plenty of time for the roads to dry. Partly cloudy, partly sunny, 56-58 degrees through the ride.
we may be able to park along Arroyo Blvd as we’ve done in the past if they don’t allow access to the aquatic center parking
lot. Fingers crossed and maybe have to get there a little earlier.
Happy New Year!!🎆🎇🧨

Here is the link to Mitch Friedman FB page for this event.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1737069073297770
Below are photos from the ride. Mitch does a much better job at taking moving objects. A good start for the new year. Lively discussion about Frame Saver material.
My plan of doing the 123 miles was a bust due to weather and a tweaked shoulder. I hope to finish one before the month is over.
Happy New Year everyone.

We had 10 riders including two we picked up in the way. Scott, Filipe, Salvatore, Tee Phan, Me, Manny, and 4 others. Mitch Friedman from the FB page and Chuck were there to see us off. The parking lot was literally empty as the Aquatic Center was closed.
It was cloudy and partly sunny for most of the ride but after getting to Beantown, (now closed permanently 😢 ) after getting some pizza, clouds moved in from the north and mountains and it light rained for about 30 minutes. There are bathrooms at the Starbucks around the corner though.
The groups took off without me while I was in the bathroom, the fellow and GF we picked up decided to wait out the rain and stayed, I left in pursuit and picked up two young carbon riders along the way (turn out they were from Pomona and after chatting with us at the end they were heading back to Pomona - long round trip!) and rejoined the group.
Sunny at the end, we passed 6 Rose Parade floats being staged on the south end of the parking lot on the closed off street adjacent to the Rose Bowl, that was neat as I’ve never seen a Rose Bowl Float close up! Honda, NASCAR, Sunkist (I think) were among them. Sorry no pics of the floats as we were being hustled along by traffic control. It was getting crowded with onlookers too.

Scott’s Klein training bike

Vintage mixte

Manny’s Eddy Merckx

tmmnguyen’s Guerciotti

Filipe’s vintage Lygie

More pics (although I didn’t take a shot of my Italvega this time).

Schwinn Paramount

Very interesting splatter painted Daccordi

Salvatore’s Zullo

an early steel Giant around the corner in the rain

outside seating at the pizzeria, luckily two large umbrellas helped shield from the sudden rain.

waiting out the elements

Bikes barely out of the rain

Beantown closure as of December 15, 2022, just couldn’t recover from the car damage and subsequent closure even after rebuilding. They said it seemed like patrons moved on to other spots. Two other restaurants nearby also closed nearby during the pandemic.

Some of the most ornate lugs ever and so many custom touches, brackets and braze ons, amazing and cool as heck.

Finally, some funnies at our Bean Town stop.
We ran into an older fellow at Beantown who regaled us with a story of his younger racer self running over a crashed cyclist during a race only to find not only his wheels flat spotted, but fork and frame bent. He said he got the tubes replaced, fork repaired and all repainted by some guy named, uh, Baylis, Brian Baylis, heard of him??? 🤔🤔
Then he said to all of us that a long time ago he used to go to a vintage ride that started at the Rose Bowl, and he sure would want to meet up again with the guy who ran it (Chuck was standing next to him!!).
We said “Hey, we’ve heard of Baylis (many knew him personally and a few have his bikes or those he painted), we are that ride, and the guy you’re looking for is Chuck Schmidt, right over there!”
He said “you don’t look like the Chuck I remember”. Chuck said “yeah, we all got old!” Big laugh from that encounter. We’ve invited him to the next rides and this group.
