How to remove that rear lamp

Hello;

I am trying to remove my ugly brake calipers and rear lamp.

But I couldn't remove that one. I pull one side, and force the other side. It turns easily, but never get off.

What should I do?

Take a grinder to both bolts...hope you have a steady hand.

You might get a nicer or less aggressive approach to your problem in the bicycle mechanics section.

Just my way of going about things when it comes to stubborn parts/bolts.

* Wear eye protection *, and use either a grinder or a dremel tool and cut it off. I'd probably go with a dremel first, being that one slip with the grinder and you'll seriously gash your frame. With the dremel tool, you can be a bit more surgical about it.

You might be able to grab the thing with a vise-grip on one side and turn the nut off.

Use a hacksaw and cut it off just to the left of the reflector bracket.

I did exactly the same, but both sides are turning

Ditto. That would be my first move. Grab the bolt with a vise grip, turn the nylock nut.

Did you grab the bolt itself or the big fat nut? Grab the bolt. If that doesn't work both sides are stripped and you need to cut it off.

Aha, ok, I got it. I will try to grab the bolt. Thank you

Whatever I've done, I couldn't remove it. The nut on the right side of the picture is not working and it should be broken.

zze86 12-15-16 07:30 AM

You've likely stripped the nut. I would try in the following order:

-use PB blaster or WD40 spray onto the nut/bolt before proceeding
-Use a vise grip on both the bolt and nut. Get the vise grip as tight as you can until your hands hurt trying to clamp it down. Clamp that sucker down as hard as you can since you will be throwing the bolt and nut away when you're done.
-Try hammering on a smaller socket onto the nut. Example if the nut is a 10mm, try hammering on a 9mm socket or if the 9mm feels too loose still hammer on a 8mm socket.
-Use a propane torch and heat up the bolt. Be sure to point the flame away from your bike. Try to get it cherry red hot. Re-try either meethod above.
-Dremel tool with cutoff wheel

Another option would be:

Take the wheel off and bend the reflector bracket down and out of the way. Cut off the bolt with a hacksaw, then drill it out enough to clear the nut on the bracket side of the brake bridge.

I would have used the vice grip approach myself, but assuming the nut is now stripped, cut off wheel on the bracket side will be quick and relatively safe. I recently had to do that with a 5" wheel in a drill and it took only a few seconds, and you have lots of space to maneuver in this case.

if you don't have tools take it to a bike shop. there may be other things they can help you with

This was my first thought.

No torch unless you want to burn the paint and perhaps damage the stay.
The easy and simple way....vise grips both sides and turn the nut on the left while pulling.
If that does not work cut the bolt on the let and use a punch to set the bolt for drilling...use a bit a little larger than the bolt and your done....not very hard to do the bolts/nuts are not grade 8. BTDT

Grinder with cutting wheel. Cut off most of bolt head, then carefully shave down until it is free. A dremel tool can be used as a mini grinder.

A nut splitter might be able to get that nut off, about $5 at the local Harbor Fright.

nlerner 12-15-16 03:24 PM

I say hack off the brake bridge--problem solved.

You should be able to tighten the vice grips so the bolt won't twist. You will have to replace the bolt, so clamp as hard as you need to. You should be able to hold the be end and actually break the bolt with the wrench as you twist, so it sounds like you can tighten the vice grips more.

I just looked at the picture. It looks like you're gripping the large spacer. That won't work. You've gotta grip directly the bolt.
