As a Seller in order to avoid using Paypal would you use merchantinc.com as an alternative? According to Ebay that would be allowed by registering with Ebay: Selecting payment methods

As a Buyer would you buy from a seller with an outside payment gateway using credit or debit account?

Ebay offers the same "Sellers Protection" and "Buyers Protection" for "Gateway accounts" offered by sellers. The difference is avoiding Paypals indiscretion when dealing with sellers by offering 180 day protection to the buyer. Where as the Credit Card company have differing protection length of days offered.

Has anyone on BF, buyer or seller, ever had any good or bad experiences with alternate payments allowed by Ebay?

You can take your preferred payment choice but you still have to keep accounts if sold on eBay. The IRS considers you a business in some cases and you have to pay taxes on your sales.


You can still sell it on other venues, or even privately but you cannot complete a sale on eBay and circumvent their requirements. If you do sell if somewhere else you are required to pull the listing promptly/mark it no longer available, for whatever reasons.


eBay no longer owns Paypal, but in the US at least practically all of the transaction involve them in some form, even credit card purchases. This has been challenged and defeated in other countries, leaving several payment options at your disposal.


If the seller wishes, you can pay anyway you like, they just have to account for it.


I still use a third party to buy for me after most of 8 years...they said Paypal wasn't mandatory anymore about 6 years ago but then the CHECKOUT form was changed shortly afterward to eliminate any apparent options.

Better than ebay policy but laughable they require electronic payment when picking up in person, I've both received from buyer and as buyer paid by cash. What is wrong with accepting cash in hand directly from a buyer? Used item sold as is and shown. Done.

Can even work just as good by postal throughout the world. Received crispy bills by mail all he way from Australia. Bank accepted and away the item was shipped. Perfect.

Also there's much better clearing payment sources, especially for large ticket items. Paypal and ebay think they're the best and force their products/services. Fed up with mandatory Paypal after they failed -twice- and or not fully covering listing / refund fees. When its not your fault as a seller, why can't one recoup listing fees or service transactions? You've got to fight for it, they will not automatically do it. All discretionary by someone at ebay?

Lots of vintage auto parts transactions done with many NOT even ebay users. Have had others (likely old timers :) see a listing and contact me direct. Escrow services, shipped UK and Japan. Zero issues.

As long as you pull/close it promptly, there is no problem there. You do have the right to list and sell anywhere you wish in addition to eBay.
