1985 Serotta / Murray frame set
I purchased this frameset today, any ideas on getting the history? I.e. Was it used in competition and who was it made for?

This looks to be one of the Team 7-Eleven bikes from 84-86, this on has the super cool 84 Olympic seat post, as far As I know these were basically competition bikes and not retailed so it was likely originally owned by one of the team riders or members. Very cool piece of cycling history.

Is that a rider's name on the top tube?
Edit, seems to just say its Campy equiped... |

Damn. Great pick up.

Left seatstay is bent. What is written in white on the right chainstay? I can't read that. Serotta?http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...psohdcs1kr.jpg
|
Yep. Serotta.
|
Most years 7-11 rode on Dura-Ace.....

http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j2...psdvfyqhol.jpg The left chain stay does have a bend in it; it's a pretty mild bend, I'm hoping to get it straightened at a competent bike shop and if it can't it will be a neat wall hanger. |
Wow, what a unique bike.
Hopefully the seatstay can simply be straightened and realigned. If not, it can be replaced, but then you'd loose some chrome and red paint, but maybe it could be done conservatively, only requiring touch-up painting. |
BB appears to be octalink series 1 either DA or Ultegra.
|
as long as it's not crimped, the seat stay should straighten fine.
Knew you had found this Tad, but didn't get the pavement-pounding story to find it - tell me about it on our next ride... |
Such a great score, I'm envious, and that seat post is so cool. That seat stay looks fixable. Please post pics, when you get it built up.
I would guess Olympic team bike, not early 7/11. |
I wrote to Serotta not too long ago about a serial number and they responded with good info - might be a good place to start...

Way neat! Premium C&V cred, piece of US cycling history, Olympic's, first of's, etc.. No doubt a reputable frame builder could sort it out and align. Worth building to near original spec.

Keep in mind a lot of things/vehicles/bikes etc. model year comes out the year before ie= 85 could have come out in 84, just sayin. ;)

I think the Olympic seat post is interesting but the limited information I've found on line suggests the first number of the serial number is the year of manufacture; if that is true this bike has a s/n 51228 (1985?).
|
That is a super cool find....congrats!
|
Are you certain the seatstay isn't supposed to have that bend? I know Serotta used some interesting shapes in their stays.
|
I just got off the phone with Tad - he paid wall-art price for the frame...
|
FWIW, the frame has the early 1986 team livery. The 1984 and 1985 versions did not have the white panels. The later 1986 team bicycles had white forks and stays, as opposed to chrome.
