Steel frame no fork.

Has anyone used a carbon fork on a steel frame? Just curious about the ride quality.

Yes. It's fine. Just try to match the trail and rake of the OEM fork.

I have a Serotta CSI with a CF F1 fork.

It's the bees knees.

I also have a CSI that has been heavily modded by Eric Estlund.

All discs, so the steel front fork is likely stiffer than a board.

Only one way to be sure and that's to build it and ride it.

Have the Nashbar threaded carbon fork on a trek 760 and it is just fine. Would prefer steel, but the carbon is a little bit lighter and cheaper than a new matching custom made fork.

Vintage carbon forks vary. I have a giant aero carbon with threaded aluminum and it's noticeably flex, so much so that it is being reconsidered. Another bike has a woundup with steel steered that's rock solid/stiff. The last is a 1" threadless ritchey carbon pro that wiggle still retails that rides like a modern bike. I also have a couple of bikes with aluminum forks that are suprisingly comfortable --old vitus.

Not really a answer to the question but , I had a carbon fork on a Alum. bike . As you might suspect it was awful , no fault of the fork . Right after that bike I built a full carbon bike and I could not believe the ride . So I would think that a nice riding steel frame with a carbon fork would ride just fine . Haha I'm putting together another Alum. bike (I only ride concrete bike paths) so should not be a problem, or not . Anyway I was looking for a carbon fork for this bike , needed a 1 inch steer tube I ran across quite a bit of stuff on the Bay threaded and non and some pretty cool non thd. headsets . But I ran across a nice Alum. Vitus fork with the death rake so I'm happy . What frame are you building up ?

Theres a nicely priced Davidson Impulse on ebay with no fork. Ive always wanted to try a Davidson and I got thinking about how I would build it. The good thing is the frame is black, so I think a threaded carbon fork would look ok on it. Add some black components and black wheels.

Yeah, I catch grief a lot for saying this but I find several of my steel forks to offer a better ride in terms of comfort on rough roads over the 3 C.F forked bikes I have. It just seems to me that a well designed steel fork offer better compliance on rough roads while giving up nothing in the handling department. Obviously there is a weight penalty. I've got two steel LeMonds with C.F. forks and the Ti Lynskey with a C. F. fork. I find most of my steel bikes with steel forks just feel better to me not that any of the C.F forked equipped bikes are bad. I doubt you'll regret using a good CF fork and if I was building a dedicated climbing machine I'd probably go with one for the weight savings.

...I have one of those Specialized Allez steel frames that came originally equipped with a plastic fork. It seems to work fine, but I rarely ride it. It's light and has Ksyrium wheels, so it goes too fast for me to see anything along the way as I whiz past.

I'm just kinda shopping around right now. But I'm looking for a go fast bike and this would certainly fit the bill.

I have a few steel Merckxes and really like the way they handle on the downhills, especially my MX Leaders...so solid! I also have a steel Speedvagen with a carbon fork, that I had custom made to the measurements of my MX Leader. (It even has a level top tube) I go back and forth about which one I like better, but if I had to choose, I think I prefer the MX Leader even though it's heavier, and I think a major part of it is the steel fork. I'm a big guy (6'2" 210lbs) so that may be the reason. I've often thought of getting a steel fork for the Speedvagen to see if it will ride like the Merckx, but they are both wonderful, special bikes, and I'm fortunate to be able to choose.

I would think it depends a lot of which carbon fork you get. It's my understanding that carbon is extremely sensitive to design and construction issue in terms of the way it feels, so one carbon fork isn't necessarily going to respond the same as another.

My '01 LeMond Buenos Aires came with a carbon fork that has skinny little blades that make it look like a steel fork. I've read a lot of people saying it's too flex, but I love it.

I bought a Primato with a Look carbon fork, contemporary of the time. OK, switched it to the original steel and I liked the bike better. I don't think it was the ride quality but the steering.
Original steel fork had more rake, it appears to me the vast majority of carbon forks have one or very limited rake options, couple that with axle to crown length (along the steering axis with a right angle to the axle) where carbon forks often are longer than steel forks and it is tricky not to change the handling when making the switch.

The first early bike I liked with a carbon fork was a '98 Zurich, have ridden a couple of aluminum frames w/ carbon and they could not be saved.
On a custom by someone like Bill Davidson where great skill has gone into the design I suspect that which carbon fork selected might make a big difference, rake surely would be important as stated above. Woundup makes many models for different purposes and each at various rakes.
Makes me wonder if the "state of the art" builders of carbon wonders use size specific designed forks for high end models or even on the lower end bike.

I saw that too but started worrying about how the original fork came to be MIA.

My thoughts exactly! I would want to be sure to inspect that frame carefully especially the underside of the downtube & toptube for wrinkles.

I've ridden a steel frame with an older threaded Profile fork. It was fine, nothing special. Better than aluminum, not as nice as a quality steel fork. I think the tricky part today would be finding a carbon fork with a 1" steerer.

re: that Roubaix fork - I have a Schwinn Circuit with the Ruby SL fork back in the day (~1998?). It was super heavy and had poor small bump absorption.
