Need help accessorizing a Cinelli stem ?!?

Need creative ideas to fill-in a hole.
American dime would almost fit, don't know the Italian coin sizes.
Probably going on a Dutchie, so there's a possible set of ideas.
Not really looking to replace with an original Cinelli bit = sorry purists, not your thread.

I have a Cinelli with the same missing piece. I thought about painting the depression black or the colour of the bike but, since it does not affect the integrity of the stem, let it ride that way.

Piece of cork? Could get some cork gasket material at an auto parts store & cut it to size.

Or shave off the top of a wine bottle cork.

Cork holds moisture. No.

Are you kidding? Do you store your bike outside? Is this a moving part?

And the worst part: cork does not absorb moisture, and is quite waterproof.

They make fly rod grips out of cork. They don't absorb moisture on my rods.

If it were me, I'd turn a disc of brass or nickel silver to go in there. Maybe with concentric grooves or something.

Ebay has a multitude of $10 stickers for just this purpose:

Certainly fits the purpose! :)
................. but from @artclone type guy, it lacks originality. ;)

My bad on the cork. :p Never been a fisherman.
.....and a cork backing, glued in place, opens up a whole array of possibilities.
Pins, tietacks, maybe even an orphaned cuff link can be re-purposed. :D

Hhhmmn - Dutchie??

fietsbob 01-03-17 11:54 AM

A 1R stem that logo fills the hole that was bored in the stem to get the wedge
mechanism in the stem that clamps the bar in place..

You could polish the plastic down to remove the white ink.

You could Make an Investment casting based on the piece in question and have the front A dot of Gold,
if you wish and can drop the $ for that Volume of Au.

3D print another one , maybe put a little Pinwheel mounted there . NL flag colors.

??

For a man with poor turning skills, how is this done inexpensively. Reminder, this is the crap stem in the bunch.
Is this type of product (?) available at Le Atelier Gugie? gugie

i'll search coins from Holland.

Any luthier could make you a small medallion from mother-of-pearl, abalone, or a variety of tonewoods... or you could make your own by sanding or filing an old button to size.

Come to think of it, I'd use aluminum. So it doesn't stand out like a sore thumb. Although the suggestion of wood is an interesting one.

I could make you a disc on my lathe, Wildwood. Aluminum or brass would be easy. Wood a tad more difficult as it would need to be turned cross grain, to show pretty grain, unless you didn't mind end grain. Which is usually not that good looking.

A coin is an interesting idea. Is this stem destined for a Dutch bike or something?

JohnDThompson 01-03-17 01:04 PM

Too bad this isn't round:

That guy has some interesting stuff on his page. Including repro Campy barrel adjusters for not too much money.
And a reasonable Stronglight/TA crank remover.

Salamandrine 01-03-17 01:12 PM

If it were mine I'd turn and polish a small piece of blue plexiglass, and make it a Cobalto stem. :D Should be doable on a hand drill.

Great idea! Then you can pin reminder notes to it like your grocery list.:innocent:

I've ALREADY semi-insulted a couple of early posters (my humble apologies to them), so I do not wish to task anyone.

The 3D printer is an idea that stretches my experience and seems an inexpensive fit for the technology. Small, plastic type stuff, non wearing, with a decorative pattern (or something) on the top layer, ... like 3D printing for solid buttons with tigher tolerances. I may price out a small order for a dozen or so. What pattern on the surface, Concentric Circles? Flag Nationalities?

edit: but if someone turned out a few in brass I would compensate for a few samples. A thickness just greater than the depth of the hole would permit engraving, application of a decal, or such fancy things things.... ??? Heck maybe even @fietsbob 's silliness about a dab of gold could be applied to a smooth blank.

oh, and a slight wedge (how do you spell that 'chamfered' word)
