help dating very early Paramount
 
Does anyone know when the Paramount track bikes started using the Pxxx serial numbers? I've seen a '41 at thecabe.com with P260, and the waterfordbikes.com site says the originals in '38 started with Axxx and went to P's later. I'm trying to date one in the P120's. Thanks!

I realize that's a pretty obscure, boring question, so thought the least I could do was add a picture of the bike.

we like obscure questions as long as they are about bikes. The factory fire trashed the records pre-48. This guy

is building a pre-48 list, and can probably help pinpoint your year. You should contact him, so he can build evidence for his list. A beautiful bike, btw. An acquaintance once restored a 1938 (based on the original owners' recollection) and he thinks the serial number started with a P, but doesn't want to testify to that in court. If you need a place to store it I could free up a hook in my garage, I suppose.

Great, I knew someone here would know where to start! My grandfather was the original owner and I can't believe I didn't get more details from him; then I could be the one with the obscure answers. Oh well, it's amazing that between Schwinn and Waterford they didn't have duplicate records. Why didn't they back up their files? I'll contact the guy making the list and also include info about the '41. Thanks again!

Yeah, it's in perfect shape - I tried it on rollers several times and once on the street even about 20 years ago, but I've never put graphite in it and it's just stayed indoors (never in a garage!) since.

That's great! You're fortunate to have a nice bike like that in your family. You ought to ride it more often.

The stem is mightily angled downward...was your grandfather a trackie? That's some serious bentoverness. The rims are not wood? I can't tell from the photo, but the spoke nipples look kind of wierd...are they larger than normal?

He was a track racer and also had a road bike companion Paramount that he wrecked in the early 70's. Wish I had it for parts. He was still riding both at that time so a few things like wheels and probably the seats had changed. It's now Itlalia and I think the originals were Brooks? I'm waiting for a late 30's Schwinn catalog repro to arrive so I can tell what's changed.

Good eyes - the back nipples are 2 cm and the fronts 1.6. Thw wheels are std metal types with no brand and the tires, which I've never changed, are Hutchinson. Here's a closer view.

I don't have anything to add about dating your Paramount, but I wanted to say that it is one sweet machine.
