Which is an better value? De Rosa content

I'm preparing to sell my wife's De Rosa Professional. I'm not asking for valuation, but rather what would be more desirable. I'm planning on using the auction site, rather than here, because you guys are cheap ;)

It is currently built with a Centaur/Comp 10s triple drivetrain. I can easily switch it to a Centaur double. I have the parts mostly on hand. I want to sell fairly quickly and obviously, maximize profit. The frame is a 50cm ST, so likely would sell to a woman or short male.

Which is more sellable to the hive mind?

I know parting it out is the way to maximize return, but I don't want to do that.

Pics, because I heard you folks like pictures:

I use triples on half of my bikes, but they're not usually popular with buyers. I say double. Ironically, Campagnolo triples often sell for good money as a component.

The triple is sensible.
People are not sensible. Double up front.

I view De Rosa as a racing machine and racing machines should be equipped with doubles.

Save the triple for your full fenders, touring geometry and 38mm tires.

Nice bike BTW.

Why Not Both?

Add a line to your listing "Winning bidder has their choice between these two crank sets, contact me after end of auction to let me know which one you'd like me to ship with the bike." Include good pictures of each, of course. The guy who wants the double will bid higher if he knows he can get the double, and vice versa for the guy who prefers the triple. And they'll be bidding against each other.

People aren't necessarily sensible, but they do like choices.

Double.

Gorgeous bike.

Hope you get a bundle. :)

"I just picked up this sweet De Rosa touring bike" - said no purchaser ever.

Andy_K 01-14-17 08:09 PM

If it were me buying, I'd want the triple, but I voted double because I recognize that nobody else wants that.

When I'm looking to buy a bike, I automatically pass on a race bike with a triple. Unless its a crazy low price, because I'm cheap.

I would say triple just be contrarian but that would be a lie.

Double.

Wildwood 01-14-17 10:30 PM

To be honest, it's the long cage RD that's visually irritating, moreso than the triple chainrings.
I agree the double is more traditional, but a tight triple 12-26 rear, short (or mid) cage is quite useful.

edit: I have new Veloce and 2004 Chorus and really prefer the front derailleur shifting on the earlier Ergo10, especially for triples. I have yet to experience anyone's 11sp.

That insect on your wall is rather large.

I say sell it with both sets of components. The triple will not bring much these days and unless you go to a more modern front crank, the 53 front tooth isn't everyone's cup of tea, especially if they hill climb. The fact that the frame is a 50 is another bummer. Like you said, it'll have to be a lady or a short male. Most ladies (and please don't shoot me) prefer a "turn-key" bike that is modern and reliable. That has been my experience, anyhow. Nostalgia is lost on them most of the time.

BTW, I have the same frame in the same color.

***Are you SURE you want to sell a bike that is so loved that it's head tube picture is beside the little one's?!! I say find a closet, and consider it an investment in that little person's riding future. At least when they are old enough to cherish it for what it is...***

I thought it might be part of the display.

Double --- this reasoning is why i searched for a compact double square taper crankset for mine
--- i thought it would look a little less sporty with a Racing T setup

The head tube picture is a different De Rosa. I have more than one ;)

Thanks, everyone. It looks like a NIB Centaur double is going on, along with Centaur frt & rear derailleurs. I'm also considering swapping out the Ergos for the older, rounded hood Centaurs in silver. I prefer the new style. I don't think it will impact the sale one way or the other, maybe even be a plus. A lot of folks prefer the alloy rounded hood Ergos. The new style is more comfortable to me.

As long as your at it fix all the other set up issues. Ditch the seat, lower the seat post, level the handlebars.

Hardrock23 01-15-17 06:10 PM

Id give the option of double or triple in the AD.

Its about my size, and Id buy it as is...but thats me.
