Very old Saeta with Nervex lugs
Found this interesting thing today while hunting bikes. It definitely has issues, but I thought it needed to be saved.
I really don't know anything about it other than the fact that it has Nervex lugs, and I was just told on FB that it is Mexican, and was made in Guadalajara. Any info is appreciated!

This is a cool bike with serious bonus points for the seat post decal. I can't help you ID this bike but I did find a bike from Argentina in the wilds of Iowa, https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...ine-parts.html
We should start a thread on C&V Spanish American bikes!

Thanks guys! I gave $100 for it. I think it's pretty cool too. I'm excited to clean it up and learn more about it!
I'm not sure what the tubing is, but my necklace hit the top tube as I was leaning over it earlier and it gave off a beautiful sustained ring!
Also, that bike from Argentina is gorgeous!!! That's a killer find

Here's a few stamps I've found so far. The Nervex numbers are pretty hard to make out at the moment.

From that front derailleur I would guess it was made somewhere between 1960-63.

Very cool! What a great find!
You are going to need a Stronglight crank puller, 23.35 mm. Not terribly hard to find. Do not try to use a TA puller, which is 23.0 mm. The TA puller works sometimes, but destroys cranks sometimes. I suspect this would be the latter.

Yes -- major points for being unusual, old, stylish, and with nice lugs. Let's see how it cleans up. I am very glad you saved it, and I do not think you overpaid at all.

A lot of bicycle racing fans in Mexico. your bike looks hi-end and old (60s) --but be aware the those lugs were also used on very low end kids bikes like the Carerra Sport. Just saying because if you run across that in your search don't be confused---that's not what your bike is.

I've been trying to find some more information about the brand, and the only thing I'm finding are Saetas that came from Eibar, Spain. Could it have been imported? A special export model for Mexico, maybe? My first impression was rather fifties than sixties as well, BTW.

Cool! I especially like the paint at the seatstay caps. I think it will clean up well.

Really like this. Cockpit with the stem, brakes hoods and the bottle cage is pretty cool.

You scored !
Nice collection of components and that bottle cage... bonus.
Good price for sure. Wonder what saddle would have come on that?

Hi,
I must say that I'm no expert whatsoever. Nevertheless you can check all this online:
From here on it is just my own opinion:
Keeping in mind that, even if lacking the "ciclos -Saeta- Eibar" text, the badge is clearly cross by the same arrow. Also we must keep in mind that by that time there was a lot of refugees runing away from Spain to Mexico, so it can be a clear source of influence on that badge design. I don't know if Valseca was involved in bicycle production or just as a promoter, he certainly promoted the sport, but I can't find any info about his so called "own" brand. So maybe it could have been Benotto's workship.
Even in the late 90s there were well known spanish brands producing bicycles with "US standards" with disctintive design, but tagged as "american". The funny part is that some of those frames ended up with the standard brand decals...
What a mess...
PS: if you have any requirements with spanish text and translations, feel free to ask, no worries.

"Ciclos Saeta" was from Euskadi, northern Spain.
Benotto has quite a few bicycles with lugs like those, with the very same red dots on them, in fact.
It is said that Jose Garcia Valseca managed to supply a shop with his own "Saetas" brand bicycles.

Number stamped in dropout at rear of axle slot may be a date. Partially hidden by gear cable housing. Digit showing is an 8; wonder if there might be a 5 in front of it...
Another possibiltiy might be frame size in cms.

Well I haven't really had a chance to mess with the bike any, and someone contacted me with what seems like a reasonable offer, so I may be passing this one on.
I honestly think it deserves more of a restoration than I can afford to give it right now :/
