I would think an Italia would have sloping Fork Crowns.

So would I, but a replacement fork is not out of the question (get them serial numbers!) and with the seat stay treatment I wouldn't have thought it was a lower model. Anyway I think this is a fun part of C&V and look forward to getting to the bottom of it!

Clean living and a fast outfield, must be the explanation for your good fortune. Another vote for pics of the Competition. Now I am wishing I had room for just one more.

Such a great find for a scrap heap. Count me among those jealous. If only there were one around here where someone were throwing away vintage 63-65 cm frames

Is there an online catalog that I can reference? I couldn't make out the SN on the bottom bracket, but ill pull the forks tonight and get it. Also ill check the top tube, now that you mention it, it does look a little tweaked there.. lets hope not... also ill take some more detailed pictures of the competition. Thanks for all the info everyone!

The catalogs are on this site:

Holdsworth Bicycles

Unfortunately Mr. Kilgariff died in the last year or two, and I don't know who is maintaining the site. For now, it is useful.

I own a Holdworth and a Holdsworth-made Claud Butler, but I am no Holdsworth expert. But this looks a lot like what you have:

Awesome find! I have a Mistral I'm pondering how to build up. You did well and can do no wrong however you build it up.

Judging by the pic you provided, I'll echo a few others on here in saying that it definitely looks like it's sustained a front-end crash. Note the bend in the top tube just before the headtube lug, as well as the paint discolouration in the downtube also just before the headtube lug.

At our bike co-op, frames like that head straight to the scrap pile--even if they're really nice. That way we don't run the risk of a patron trying to build it up without being aware of the damage.

However, in this case, it might be worth seeking advice on repairing the frame. Holdsworth's are worth salvaging!

yeah i've researched a little bit, and this seems to be the closest match so far. What was the mistral intended for? Touring?

"The early Mistral was available in 1934 and was a copy of a Tour de France frame. This early model was gone by 1938.

"Re-introduced in 1963 It was bang up to date in design and became the most successful Holdsworth road frame. It was a full Reynolds 531 butted frameset at a modest £13.19.6d and was an immediate success. It had 72o parallel angles, Prugnat "I" Type Italian spearpoint lugs and a plain, sloping-shouldered crown. The 41" wheelbase made it versatile, being suitable for time - trialing to touring, with ample clearances and safe steering. Its best feature was its incredibly strong rear triangle, its 5/8 " seat stays fully wrapped over the seat cluster by a long tapered chamfer. It had Campagnolo forged dropouts with screw-in adjusters. It was robust, reliable and cornered well. It sold very well and effectively blew away the Cyclone and Monsoon."

From Kilgariff's site. I added the boldface.

SOOO... there is a small ripple on the down tube and top tube, i'm still going to get it resprayed. The forks don't match either, but they were color matched to the frame. SN of the Fram i think is " 11158" and the forks are "3739" SO i'm guessing that the bike was ridden after a collision. It doesn't look drastic but i'm going to take it to a local guy to verify anyway.
more detailed pics here

The Raleigh Competition is a 22.5/ 57cm see pictures here

I agree: very minor damage to the 2 main tubes, and even tho a replacement fork it looks like a British item and at least has Campy ends with eyelets, but it isn't very "Holdsworth". The frame looks to have nicer-than-average lugwork and will be well worth some 'restoration' efforts. Nice score!

Alas.. it was not meant to be... after a much more detailed inspection i discovered 2 cracks. 1 on the drive side drop out by the adjuster and the other on the headtube lug where it meets the top tube...

That's a bummer. I'd clean it up, spray a can of clearcoat, and hang it on a wall as wall decor!

I'm still going to have a frame builder check it out. @Andrew R Stewart is in my area, maybe he can chime in here and tell me the bad news

One thing i did want to mention was the crack in the lug is in middle. It doesn't run up to the edge like most cracks do. It's an odd place for a crack that's for sure.

Sounds more like a weld seam than a crack. Many lugs of that era were formed from sheet metal and welded
to form the tube sockets.

Do you have a picture?

Is that something Andrew might have the capacity to repair? (I see you already had the thought while I was verifying that I was remembering his name properly)
