PLEASE sign the attached petition to save the Bartali Museum from extinction
The Museum which houses all of Gino Bartali's artifacts is in trouble. Gino donated all of his racing memorabilia to it before his death and the museum was built right across from the home where he was born, in Ponte a Ema, Province of Florence, Italy.

Besides being a great campionissimo, Bartali was honored by the holocaust museum in Israel for his efforts to save lives during the WW II occupation in Italy. This great man's memories must be preserved!
The museum is currently being run by volunteers and there is not even enough money to keep the lights on, so it only opens by appointment.
Please sign the petition that is being circulated at the above link. There is a further explanation of the museum's plight, in both English and Italian at the petition web page.
Please re-post this. We want to get as many signatures as possible so that the Italian government knows that enough people care about Gino Bartali's legacy.
Thanks for your help!

I'm biased based on my background...but Bartali's courage and character should be preserved as an example for future generations. Standing up and doing what's right, for the simple reason that it is what's right...and doing so for others...is, to me, what defines greatness. Standing up for someone else's tribe when threatened and dehumanized is the highest form of sacrifice and nobility.
This is a man truly righteous among the nations and we should all aspire to his courage and selflessness when we see other groups labeled as "other" and placed in danger. We need him as a testament to bravery, honor and character...we need to immortalize those that embody these virtues as a road map and example.
There are always people who will point at others and say they're why you don't have more...we need to preserve the memory of those that resist such base emotions and appeals to tribalism.
When you look at the death rates across Europe, Italy's is startlingly low...and the reason for that is because so many in Italy said no. So many in Italy elected to protect and shield their country men. Bartali, and those like him, are why families survived, and if that isn't worth honoring, what is?

Signing a petition is fine but I'm sure that donations would also be appreciated. Yet, I see no method for making donations, other than to the AVAAZ website. There does not appear to be any means to donate directly to a specific cause.

I always think of the famous picture of Gino shifting a Cambio Corsa on a bike which also featured a half-step suicide front shift

All it takes is a few people doing the right thing. Back then, when it was life or death. And now, when people need to know. I'm in. I think we may have people who know people.

I would donate, too. The man was an example to us all. Any effort to fight fascism from the seat of your bike is an effort I can get behind.
@KonAaron Snake: Maybe start a Go-Fund-Me page until we figure out where the money should go to? Someone conversant in Italian should try to contact the folks running the museum.

Sounds like there might be more to this than merely lack of funds. Museum opened in 2006, closed in 2009. This is dated 2010, when it re-opened. Mind you I am not an authority; this is based on 5 mins or internet research. My point is it would seem prudent to investigate further and make sure any funding goes to the parties most likely to preserve GB's memorabilia and story.
Bartali museum reopens, | The Florentine
After months of controversy, the Gino Bartali Museum in Ponte a Ema, Florence has finally re-opened to the public. The museum holds temporary ex-hibits and an important permanent collection of cycles, jerseys, biographies and stories of Italy's great cycling champions, as well as an entire room dedicated to the titles won by Bartali. The closure was the result of disagreement during management negotiations involving the owners of the collection, the city and province of Florence, the city of Bagno a Ripoli, and the Associazione Amici del Museo del Ciclismo Gino Bartali, which established the museum. (Associazione Amici del Museo del Ciclismo Gino Bartali, via Chiantigiana, 177, 50126 Ponte a Ema, FI; tel. 055/6461272, www.ciclomuseo-bartali.it.)

Information on donating to the Bartali Museum
I have had a few people ask about how they can donate to the museum. Here is the response I got from Maurizio Bresci, the son of Andrea Bresci. Andrea is the elderly gentleman who opens the museum and shows you around, along with his friend, Marcello Santini:
thank you so much .
Last week we have sent a letter by our lawyer to Florence Mayor , asking for respect of signed contract with us .
We hope that with next “Giro D’Italia” starting from Ponte a Ema , we will oblige the Mayor to respect Bartali’s will
To help us you can become a member of our association , with a simple donation of 30 Eur .
You can do with on the following account :
PAYPAL : mbresci@yahoo.it
BANK : AMICI DEL MUSEO DEL CICLISMO GINO BARTALI
IBAN IT 18 Y 01030 02869 000000133909
BIC PASCITM1W04
Description “ SUBSCRIPTION 2017 “ or if don’t want to be a member “DONATION”
