I'm also sure that Mae West couldn't strip down a Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub, clean it, and put it back together in like new shape. But, hey, you're the closest we got in our little C&V gang.

And I'm sure you know when you're in another state, you just tell people you're from Portland.

Depending on my kids sports schedule, I might be able to drive down for the ride. I'd like to meet Neil.

Thread Bump!

Mssr. Lerner's Epic Trip to the PNW is right around the corner. He'll actually be in Portland proper next week. Perhaps we can get a pre-ride dinner in if he's not caught up in conference confabs or whatnot.

Thanks for the bump, Gugie! I see that the forecast every day I'm in PDX is high of 50 and 60% chance of rain. But I'm not deterred from riding! Conference-wise, I'm free as of Sat afternoon and flying back on Monday morning. Let's eat! Let's ride! Let's eat and ride some more!

I will be in town this weekend for a family deal on Saturday (early afternoon) and will have the normal drive down Friday night, leave back north Sunday night schedule. Absolutely rubbish weather this winter in both these cities, especially for daily bike commuting, so it looks like I'll bring my fender'ed Ross (now with a proper quill stem and Soma Highway One bars) to keep the classy bar nice and high. Sounds like fun. Also, another vote for beer and burgers.

I'll push to have a frame and fork ready to hand back to you.

As far as weather goes, any prediction over 2 days away is about as accurate as predicting the stock market 6 months from now. It's a SWAG. Could be 65 and sunny, could be snow. Regardless, we shall ride!

Very true about the weather. And we shall ride, regardless, indeed! It was supposed to be bad all day today up here, but at noon it got sunny and almost 50, so it's dry now and I'm going to head out on a 'dry weather' bike to enjoy it before the rain comes again tomorrow. After a few small tweaks (for the better) on the Masi, I'll probably take that.

On the frame, that would be fantastic! If not, we have our original time frame (plus/minus days/weeks) that we initially discussed and I am operating under that--anything earlier is a bonus, naturally, but you have other people in the queue ahead of me and I want to respect you and the order you've set. Thank you, either way.

Thread bump!

Just got off the keyboard with @nlerner, the big snow back east has delayed his departure by one day, but won't affect the back end of his trip.

He's got no car while he's here, and is finished with his conference Saturday afternoon. I was thinking of swinging by and picking him up for dinner. Based on his extremely high paid profession, his hotel is probably in wonderful downtown Clackatucky*, so I'll borrow my neighbors shotgun and shoot our way out. Anybody else up for Saturday dinner? If so, where?

Sunday is riding day, right now Russian intelligence is showing it sunny, so I'm pretty confident. I'm up for a Velocult meet up if that works for everyone, so the Portland Regulars can maybe plan on that.

*PDX inside joke

My wife is taking our high maintenance daughter to the coast for the weekend, so I should be free to join in for dinner. Burgers and beer were mentioned. As long as those are available I'd be happy, preferably someplace that recognizes the existence of beers that aren't IPAs.

Lessee, @Andy_K, @Insidious_C and @Velocivixen are all Westsiders, as am I. There are places with burgers and beer that also can serve non-alcoholic beverages on this side of town, so anybody from the East side will have to figger out how to get out here. @jyl, @merziac, @Jeff_Wills, come on over! @Wildwood, if'n it's clear, does a dog need sitting round yonder this coming weekend? @northbend, the snow will wait! @RiddleOfSteel will be in town for triple duty - see his new family member again, pick up a frame and fork, and get a ride in! Hey, and what's that tall vintage Centurion frame in the back of Atelier Gugie's shop - sumpin for Mssr Wills?

It's the once in a lifetime @nlerner visit to PDX fer cryin' out loud! We gotta represent! I'm missing peoples, get the bat light out.

I like the Saturday for food and Sunday for the ride. A lot! I am happy to meet anywhere, east and west. VC is good for the ride--I'll be there again soon enough. If one needs a Bandit to their Smokey, I'm one big hood-mounted Fire Chicken away from being one, on a black F-body car no less. My mullet wig is in the trunk ready to go.

Count me in for Sunday at least. You guys (and gals) will get to see my Cycle Oregon rig minus a couple of gears. The Peter Mooney set up fix gear. It will get 3 chainlines and gear ratios but I need a few custom parts. So far it has one and one half. (The half is less than useful.) Took it for 50 miles Sunday. A lot of fun. It is now sporting a Phil BB with a 113mm axle. My knees are going to love the low "Q"!.

In the teens when I got up this morning here, now warmed up to the 20s. Everything is covered in a thick layer of snow/ice after yesterday's storm. Compared to this, Portland will feel like Florida, right?

Yeah, Florida in hurricane season...

I realized today would be the perfect day to try out my carbide-studded tires and ride to work, but I've come to the point where I don't think I want to ride in such conditions. It just doesn't seem safe enough, given the distance I have.

This is the bike lane on Hudson St, iced over. The substance on the surface changes every few feet, from snow on top of ice, plain ice, wet slush, dry-ish slush, wet slush on top of ice, to bare, dry surface. There are no tires that handle all of those coverings well.

@nlerner - you may have a stretch of cold, but you Easterners certainly have more cycling days in your legs in 2017 than the average PNW-erner (west of the Cascades, that is).
@gugie - Hoping to make it south, still uncertain. It's been such a moist winter that the significant 'outside the house' chores are waaay behind. The moss & damp is ahead of me. Got a small box of framebuilding stuff to get to ya, sometime. With all your projects at least silver wire will be useful.

We're getting all this finalized, but it looks like a 30 mile, relatively flat social ride leaving from Atelier Gugie around 10ish, a stop for pastries and coffee at a countryside cafe, then back to Gugie's Grill for burgers and beer. Plenty of parking available. A redux of sorts.

Shotgunning this:
@jyl @merziac @Insidious C. @Andy_K @andy_p @Ride-Fly @Jeff_Wills and his better half? @Wildwood @Lascauxcaveman @The Thin Man @tricky @Drillium Dude @Velocivixen @johnnyace

and, of course,
@nlerner
