Nice looking bike. I sold a Super Sport last year and am still sort of regretting it. I did however just buy a really nice Sports Tourer a few days ago but it doesn't look like I'll be able to ride it for at least the next few days with all the snow outside.

Thanks Richard, Congrats on the Sports Tourer! Looking forward to seeing some pics. What parts of Brooklyn/NYC do you ride in?

I ran into the same problem when I installed the Truvative kit in my wife's Suburban. I started by trying to file the chamfer deeper on the Truvative parts but got frustrated and mounted the things on a scroll chuck on my lathe and turned off the interfering aluminum with a HSS chisel. That only took a few minutes.

Here's my '73 Sunset Orange, with an almost complete Suntour Sprint groupset.

And, here's a '72 that I built according to my son-in-laws unusual specifications.
(The frame was rough, so I had it powder-coated.)

And, make sure you use the search feature for these bikes.
I know that Pastor Bob, and a few others, have some very nice examples of the filet-brazed Super Sports of this era.

Also, here is the link to Sheldon Brown's excellent write-up about these frames:

Nice bike. I'd give the drop bars a chance over a few weeks before changing 'em out. I have bikes with both drop bars and flat bars, and drop bars are really nice once you get used to them. More positions to grab, and (to me) a very solid feel. They might seem foreign at first but you'll adjust quickly if you spend some time on them.

I'm based in the Midwood area. I usually ride out to the Rockaways or over the GWB into Jersey and once and a while do laps in Prospect. I also do some riding to get around.

USPS delivered the conversion kit this afternoon, a day early. It's a bit different than the one I got for the 71, has 4 bolts vs 3 on the first one. It installs all the way in without hitting the ledge. Also, the first one was a loose fit(by a few thou) to the opening and slid right in with scarcely any drag. New one was snug, but I could still press it in & remove by hand with slight pressure. Not tight like the original bearing races that had to be knocked out. Both kits were from Taiwan. The 66 is getting a triple crank and I'm also going to 700c wheels with a replacement chromed fork since the original chrome is in very poor condition. Don

Nice looking! I'm not sure about brifters myself, how do you like them compared to barcons?

How many here ride the 22" and how tall are you? I'm hoping it will be a good fit. It seems to be what's mostly available, with bigger sizes rarer? I'm between 5'9 and 5'10 on a good day, and buy 32" inseam pants.

Thanks for the info Don. Good to know. Not everyone has a grinder ... I have a Dremel, but wasn't looking forward to using it. One manufacturer (maybe the one you got) sells the fact that their kit is silver saying the black ones will scratch, etc. over time showing bits of true color, so another benefit I suppose? The Truvativ I initially bought has 3 bolts and definitely looks like it will need grinding. I'll probably pick up the kit you linked to as well.

We're practically neighbors, I'm in Sunset Park. What color Tourer did you get? How did you find it, and will you be making any upgrades -- if in really nice original condition, maybe there's no need to? I'll be curious to know how you like it compared to the Super Sport, and if you had made any improvements to the Super Sport.

I bought a Sunset Orange Tourer from a forum member in Long Island a few days ago. The bike is in really nice original shape. So nice that I'm scared to even ride it. He has a green one that I believe he is trying to sell as well. The Super Sport I had was also Sunset Orange. unfortunately I don't remember much about it as I had it for about a month and only rode it once.

Just wanted to say, 70's bikes aren't typically my thing but that is absolutely gorgeous.

I don't own a bike with brifters, so my experience has been minimal...but my son-in-law likes them. I like the placement of barcons, and really like them on mustache bars. With that said, my Super Sport is crisp and true Suntour friction, which I like...but I love the downtube index system on my Ironman, as well as the indexed barcons on my Koga-Miyata. (Heresy alert - I like index better than friction!)

My Sunset Orange is a 24" frame, and is probably a hair too big for me. When up in the cockpit the bike feels fine, but when swinging my leg over to mount and dismount it just feels a tad tall. Especially with water bottles in the homemade bottle carrier. My Ironman is a 23", and is perfect, while my Koga-Miyata is a 57cm frame and it also is just about perfect for me. (I'm about 5'11" with a 33" measurement from the ground up to the underside of my crotch. My jeans have a 32" inseam.)

Seriously, you might surprise yourself once you get a bit used to the different feel. I like flat bars too, but drops are great in many ways.
